A total of 117 senior medical school students at the University of Nebraska<\/p>\n

Medical Center College of Medicine have received their residency assignments<\/p>\n

through the National Senior Match Day program. Senior Match Day is an annual<\/p>\n

event held at the exact same time at UNMC and other U.S. medical schools. <\/p>\n

Residencies generally last from three to five years and allow the newly-graduated<\/p>\n

physicians to specialize in an area of medicine, such as internal medicine,<\/p>\n

family medicine, surgery or obstetrics and gynecology.<\/p>\n

The residency matching system began in 1952, placed 15,132 U.S. medical<\/p>\n

students this year into residencies in medical specialties. Under the program,<\/p>\n

students list several places they would like to train, and then are matched<\/p>\n

through a computerized national system.<\/p>\n

About 95 percent of the UNMC class received one of their top three residency<\/p>\n

assignments of choice. About 70 percent received their top choice. Sixty-three<\/p>\n

percent of the class, 70 seniors, were placed in primary care residencies<\/p>\n

this year, including 33 of the 42 seniors who will do residencies at UNMC<\/p>\n

or at a Lincoln-based family practice program affiliated with UNMC.<\/p>\n

Primary care includes family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics<\/p>\n

and obstetrics\/gynecology.<\/p>\n

Seniors who will graduate May 5, are listed by hometown, name, specialty<\/p>\n

and residency assignment.<\/p>\n
