A total of 117 senior medical school students at the University of Nebraska<\/p>\n

Medical Center College of Medicine have received their residency assignments<\/p>\n

in 27 states through the National Resident Matching Program. The program,<\/p>\n

a private, not-for-profit corporation, was established in 1952 to provide<\/p>\n

a uniform date of appointment to residency positions. Residencies last<\/p>\n

from three to five years and allow newly-graduated physicians to specialize<\/p>\n

in an area of medicine.<\/p>\n

Each year, the program conducts the match designed to optimize the rank<\/p>\n

ordered choices of students and medical program. Match Day is an annual<\/p>\n

event held at the exact same time at UNMC and other U.S. medical schools.<\/p>\n

Since 1995, UNMC has had an average of 60 percent students enter primary<\/p>\n

care residencies for their first year of training. This year, 79 students<\/p>\n

or 68 percent of the class placed in primary care, which includes family<\/p>\n

medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics\/gynecology, pediatrics and those<\/p>\n

who will ultimately train in specialties of dermatology, radiography and<\/p>\n

anesthesiology. This year, 32 percent of graduates placed in specialties<\/p>\n

of surgery, neurosurgery and orthopedics.<\/p>\n

Of 117 students, 48 (41 percent) are staying in Nebraska and 44 (38<\/p>\n

percent) will do residencies through UNMC, including at Nebraska Health<\/p>\n

System’s Clarkson Hospital and a Lincoln-based family practice program<\/p>\n

affiliated with UNMC.<\/p>\n

Seniors who will graduate May 11, are listed by hometown, name, specialty<\/p>\n

and residency assignment.<\/p>\n
