{"id":47480,"date":"2004-03-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2004-03-23T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2004\/03\/23\/104-unmc-medical-students-receive-residency-assignmentsthrough-match-day-program\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T10:42:07","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T15:42:07","slug":"104-unmc-medical-students-receive-residency-assignmentsthrough-match-day-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2004\/03\/23\/104-unmc-medical-students-receive-residency-assignmentsthrough-match-day-program\/","title":{"rendered":"104 UNMC medical students receive residency assignments\n\nthrough Match Day program"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><P>A total of 104 senior medical students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Medicine have received their residency assignments in 26 states through the National Resident Matching Program.&nbsp; The program, a private, not-for-profit corporation, was established in 1952 to provide a uniform date of appointment to residency positions, which last from three to five years and allow newly-graduated physicians to specialize in an area of medicine.<br \/>\n<P>Match Day, an annual event held at the same time at medical schools nationwide, is designed to optimize the rank ordered choices of students in medical programs.&nbsp; Since 1995, UNMC has had an average of 60 percent of students entering a primary care residency for their first year of training.&nbsp; This year, just over 59 percent of the class placed in primary care, which are considered family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics\/gynecology and pediatrics.&nbsp; In their second year of training, some students will begin training in the specialties of anesthesiology, dermatology, otolaryngology and radiology.<br \/>\n<P>Of the 104 students, 37 percent are staying in Nebraska for their training program.&nbsp; Thirty-five&nbsp; percent will do residencies through UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Centers Clarkson Hospital or a Lincoln-based family practice program affiliated with UNMC.<br \/>\n<P>The students, who will graduate May 14, are listed by hometown, name, specialty and residency assignment.<br \/>\n<P>ALLIANCE Casey Dean Johnston, orthopaedics, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha NE <BR>ATKINSON Terri Lynn Myers, family medicine, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Scottsbluff NE Program, Omaha NE <BR>BAYER Richard L.
