The University of Nebraska Medical Center and<\/p>\n

the Nebraska Health System, will broadcast a free "What’s<\/p>\n

Age Got To Do With It? <\/i>Mini-Medical School series for people<\/p>\n

interested in learning about aging issues. Beginning April 15,<\/p>\n

the six-week series will run Wednesday evenings, April 15-May 20,<\/p>\n

from 7 to 8:45 p.m. The series will be broadcast live to Grand<\/p>\n

Island, College Park, 3180 W. Highway 34, from UNMC’s<\/p>\n

College of Nursing in Omaha.<\/p>\n

There is no tuition cost to participate in the<\/p>\n

series, and parking and class guides also are free. Twelve<\/p>\n

physicians, gerontology experts and other health care providers<\/p>\n

will discuss a range of age-related issues.<\/p>\n

The following is a schedule of the series:<\/p>\n

April 15<\/b> — "What’s Normal<\/p>\n

Aging?" — An introduction to the aging process —<\/p>\n

physically and socially<\/p>\n

April 22<\/b> — "Where Did I Put My<\/p>\n

Keys?" — Memory loss, what’s normal and<\/p>\n

what’s not<\/p>\n

April 29<\/b> — "Prevention is the<\/p>\n

Best Medicine" — Making the most of your health and<\/p>\n

medications<\/p>\n

May 6<\/b> — "Tones, Bones and<\/p>\n

Balance" — What to expect with arthritis, osteoporosis,<\/p>\n

hearing loss and balance<\/p>\n

May 13<\/b> — "Helping the Helper:<\/p>\n

How to Help Yourself" — What it means to be a caregiver<\/p>\n

and where to turn for help<\/p>\n

May 20<\/b> — "Making the Most of<\/p>\n

Mature Muscles" — Physical fitness and healthy<\/p>\n

lifestyles promote healthy aging<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Diplomas will be presented on graduation night,<\/p>\n

May 20. This marks the sixth mini-medical school series<\/p>\n

conducted. Previous topics covered were cancer, diabetes, heart<\/p>\n

disease, women’s health and lung disorders.<\/p>\n

Registration is required to enroll in the<\/p>\n

program and seating is limited. Anyone interested in attending<\/p>\n

the mini-medical school in Grand Island should call College Park<\/p>\n

at (308) 385-5015.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science<\/p>\n

center in the state. Through its commitment to research,<\/p>\n

education and patient care, UNMC has established itself as one of<\/p>\n

the country’s leading centers for cancer research and treatment<\/p>\n

and solid organ transplantation. More than $25 million in<\/p>\n

research grants and contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists<\/p>\n

annually. In addition, UNMC’s educational programs are<\/p>\n

responsible for training more health professionals practicing in<\/p>\n

Nebraska than any other institution. <\/p>\n

NHS is the partnership of Clarkson Hospital,<\/p>\n

the oldest hospital in Nebraska, and University Hospital, the<\/p>\n

primary teaching facility for UNMC. NHS operates 29 clinics and<\/p>\n

health care centers serving Omaha, Plattsmouth, Gretna and Auburn<\/p>\n

in Nebraska; Council Bluffs and Shenandoah in Iowa. In addition,<\/p>\n

NHS operates more than 350 outpatient clinics in 50 communities<\/p>\n

in four states. The combined NHS system serves approximately 25<\/p>\n
