UNMC, Partners Across Nebraska Sponsor Free Health<\/p>\n

Education Series; Taking Charge of Your Health Beginning April 11<\/p>\n

The University of Nebraska Medical Center and eight sites across Nebraska<\/p>\n

invite the public to attend UNMC Mini-Medical School, a free health educational<\/p>\n

series for three consecutive Thursdays beginning April 11. The three-part<\/p>\n

series, titled, Taking Charge of Your Health, will focus on the changing<\/p>\n

health-care provider\/patient relationship. Patients, thanks in large part<\/p>\n

to the Internet, now are more educated about their health and health products,<\/p>\n

which has created a new dynamic in the patient-health provider relationship.<\/p>\n

The series will discuss the changing roles and expectations of patients<\/p>\n

and health providers, as well as educate participants on topics such as<\/p>\n

sources of legitimate health information, participating in research studies,<\/p>\n

complementary alternative medicine and herbal medicine.<\/p>\n

The free series will be held April 11, 18 and 25, from 6:30 to 8:30<\/p>\n

p.m. central daylight time, or 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. mountain daylight time.<\/p>\n

It will be broadcast live from Omaha via satellite to: Columbus, Grand<\/p>\n

Island, Kearney, Lincoln, Norfolk, ONeill, Red Cloud and Scottsbluff.<\/p>\n

Anyone with NebSat2 can downlink the series, including hospitals and schools.<\/p>\n

The goal of Mini-Medical School is to educate Nebraskans on health issues<\/p>\n

that affect them, as well as highlight the strides being made in research<\/p>\n

and treatment at UNMC. The series is geared for the public. This is the<\/p>\n

13th series. Previous topics included the immune system, the brain, cancer,<\/p>\n

womens health, genetics, heart disease, geriatrics, diabetes and the respiratory<\/p>\n

system.<\/p>\n

The relationship between patients and health-care providers has changed<\/p>\n

as patients are playing a more active role in their health, said Mike<\/p>\n

Sitorius, M.D., Waldbaum Professor of Family Practice, UNMC College of<\/p>\n

Medicine. The Internet has played a role in providing information that<\/p>\n

makes people better educated about their health conditions. This Mini-Medical<\/p>\n

School will help educate people about how they can get more from their<\/p>\n

health visit and where to seek legitimate health information.<\/p>\n

The Changing Patient\/Provider Partnership<\/u> — Learn how the roles<\/p>\n

and expectations of patients and health care providers. Presented by Joel<\/p>\n

Bessmer, M.D., assistant professor of internal medicine & general medicine,<\/p>\n

UNMC College of Medicine and Joyce Black, Ph.D., assistant professor, UNMC<\/p>\n

College of Nursing.<\/p>\n

Panel Discussion<\/u> — Moderator Michael Sitorius, M.D., will lead<\/p>\n

a panel discussion on successful strategies from patients who participate<\/p>\n

in the health-care process. Panelists include: Anne Ivey, Wayne Naro, and<\/p>\n

Wayne Houston.<\/p>\n

April 18 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (CDT)<\/b><\/p>\n

Hopes and Hoaxes: Separating Fact from Fiction<\/u> — Learn to verify<\/p>\n

whether information is reliable and where to find good sources of information,<\/p>\n

as well as when and how messages should be evaluated. Presented by Sandra<\/p>\n

Salverson, Pharm.D., adjunct instructor, UNMC College of Pharmacy and drug<\/p>\n

information specialist, Nebraska Health System.<\/p>\n

Clinical Trials:  Who Benefits from Medical Research?<\/u> <\/p>\n

Learn the ins and outs and what you need to know about participating in<\/p>\n

medical research programs.  Presented by Christopher Kratochvil, M.D.,<\/p>\n

assistant professor of psychiatry, UNMC College of Medicine.<\/p>\n

April 25 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (CDT)<\/b><\/p>\n

The Mind\/Body Connection:  What is Complementary Alternative<\/p>\n

Medicine?<\/u> — Learn how lifestyle changes and relaxation therapies,<\/p>\n

when combined with traditional medicine, can enhance the quality of your<\/p>\n

life and promote health. Presented by Diann Greener, program coordinator,<\/p>\n

UNMC complementary alternative medicine program<\/p>\n

Herbal Medicine:  They may be natural but are they safe?<\/p>\n

<\/u>— Learn how herbal medicines interact with other medications and when<\/p>\n

they can be dangerous. Presented by Tony Ranno, PharmD., UNMC assistant<\/p>\n

professor of pharmacy practice.<\/p>\n

Anyone can register for the series via website: www.unmc.edu\/takecharge.<\/p>\n

Seating is limited, registration is required.<\/p>\n

While the program is free to the public, Nebraska and Iowa nurses who<\/p>\n

wish to receive six contact hours of continuing nursing education credits<\/p>\n

can do so at a cost of $30 through the UNMC College of Nursing. The University<\/p>\n

of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing Continuing Nursing Education<\/p>\n

is accredited as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the American<\/p>\n
