The University of Nebraska Medical Center invites Nebraskans to attend<\/p>\n

a free health educational series on smallpox, titled, Smallpox: What You<\/p>\n

Need to Know, on Thursdays, Feb. 13, 20 and 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

(CST). During the series, Nebraskans will learn about smallpox, the social<\/p>\n

and ethical issues, the risks involved in the smallpox vaccine, the safety<\/p>\n

mechanisms in medical research and how the state will respond in the event<\/p>\n

of a bioterrorist attack.<\/p>\n

The goal of Mini-Medical School is to educate Nebraskans on health issues<\/p>\n

that affect them, as well as highlight the strides being made in research<\/p>\n

and treatment at UNMC. The free series will be broadcast live via satellite<\/p>\n

from Omaha to: Alliance, Columbus, Grand Island, Kearney, Lincoln, Long<\/p>\n

Pine, Norfolk, North Platte, ONeill, Red Cloud, Scottsbluff and Sidney.<\/p>\n

Continuing education credits for nurses also are available. Anyone with<\/p>\n

satellite downlink capability can receive the series by accessing Nebraska<\/p>\n

Satellite System 2, (NebSat2) channel 107.<\/p>\n

On Feb, 13, the program, Smallpox 101, speakers will discuss viruses<\/p>\n

and vaccines and the history, treatment and prevention of smallpox. On<\/p>\n

Feb. 20, Research: Risks, Rights and Responsibilities, speakers will<\/p>\n

address the risks and benefits of the smallpox vaccine and safety mechanisms<\/p>\n

in medical research. On Feb. 27, Securing Nebraskas Homeland speakers<\/p>\n

will discuss how Nebraska plans to protect the citizens of Nebraska against<\/p>\n

the threat of a bioterrorism attack.<\/p>\n

Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of presenters.<\/p>\n

While the program is free to the public, Nebraska and Iowa nurses who<\/p>\n

wish to receive six contact hours of continuing nursing education credits<\/p>\n

can do so at a cost of $30 through the UNMC College of Nursing. The University<\/p>\n

of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing Continuing Nursing Education<\/p>\n

is accredited as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the American<\/p>\n

Nurses Credentialing Centers Commission on Accreditation with approved<\/p>\n

provider status in Iowa and California.<\/p>\n

Smallpox is a contagious, and sometimes fatal disease caused by the<\/p>\n

variola virus. Fever and a progressive skin rash are symptoms. Smallpox<\/p>\n

first emerged in human populations thousands of years ago. In 1980, the<\/p>\n

disease was declared eradicated following worldwide vaccination programs.<\/p>\n

Routine smallpox vaccinations in the United States ended in 1972.<\/p>\n

Two known samples of smallpox were kept in secure laboratories in the<\/p>\n

United States and the Soviet Union. With the political upheaval that dismantled<\/p>\n

the former Soviet Union and its secret bioweapons program, some people<\/p>\n

fear that terrorists or rogue nations could have lured unemployed Soviet<\/p>\n

scientists into creating weapons of mass destruction using smallpox. After<\/p>\n

the terrorist and anthrax attacks in the fall of 2001, the U.S. government<\/p>\n

began making plans to respond to a potential attack.<\/p>\n

A detailed nationwide smallpox response plan is designed to vaccinate<\/p>\n

people quickly and contain a potential outbreak, including a plan includes<\/p>\n

the creation of healthcare teams who have been vaccinated and are ready<\/p>\n

to respond. Public and private institutions are working together to implement<\/p>\n

Nebraskas response plan.<\/p>\n

Feb. 13 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (CST)<\/u><\/p>\n

Smallpox 101 Learn the basics of viruses, vaccines and the immune<\/p>\n

system. Find out how the vaccine was developed from cowpox, why people<\/p>\n

who were immunized at one time would need to be revaccinated, and what<\/p>\n

are the potential side effects. Intro to Virology 101 will be presented<\/p>\n

by Steven Hinrichs, M.D., director, Center for  Biosecurity, University<\/p>\n

of Nebraska, director, Nebraska Public Health Laboratory, medical director,<\/p>\n

Clinical Microbiology, Professor, UNMC Department of Pathology and Microbiology;<\/p>\n

Understanding Vaccines will be presented by Jose Romero, M.D., associate<\/p>\n

professor, pediatrics and pathology\/microbiology, joint appointments at<\/p>\n

UNMC and Creighton University, chief Latino recruitment officer for UNMC;<\/p>\n

and Preventing the Spread of<\/p>\n

Smallpox will be presented by Philip Smith, M.D., professor and chief,<\/p>\n

section of infectious diseases, UNMC Department of Internal Medicine. Panel<\/p>\n

moderator will be David Crouse, Ph.D., interim vice chancellor for academic<\/p>\n

affairs, interim dean for graduate studies and professor, UNMC Department<\/p>\n

of Genetics, Cell Biology and Anatomy.<\/p>\n

Feb. 20 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (CST)<\/u><\/p>\n

Research: Risks, Rights and Responsibilities, — Meet members of<\/p>\n

UNMCs Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects,<\/p>\n

who will discuss the safety mechanisms in medical research, the social<\/p>\n

and ethical issues of the smallpox vaccine and the importance of informed<\/p>\n

consent. Research will be presented by Ernest Prentice, Ph.D., associate<\/p>\n

vice chancellor for academic affairs, UNMC regulatory compliance, professor,<\/p>\n

UNMC Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Anatomy, and chairman of<\/p>\n

the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on<\/p>\n

Human Research Protection; Rights will be presented by Tim Kelso, J.D.,<\/p>\n

attorney and community representative, UNMC Institutional Review Board<\/p>\n

for the Protection of Human Subjects; Risks will be presented by Mark<\/p>\n

Rupp, M.D., associate professor, infectious diseases, and medical director,<\/p>\n
