The C. Louis Meyer Rehabilitation Foundation, Inc., invites the public<\/p>\n

to participate in its Tee-Up for Disabilities Golf Tournament June 3 at<\/p>\n

the Tregaron Golf Course in Bellevue.<\/p>\n

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Adult Recreational Therapy<\/p>\n

Program at Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI), which is located on the University<\/p>\n

of Nebraska Medical Center campus. Held in the spring and fall, the program,<\/p>\n

run by volunteers, provides respite care for families and caregivers of<\/p>\n

adults with disabilities. Those who benefit include those with developmental<\/p>\n

disabilities, autism, cerebral palsy, Downs Syndrome, spina bifida and<\/p>\n

genetic disorders. Activities include swimming, arts and crafts, music<\/p>\n

and dance, cooking and community outings.<\/p>\n

The annual Tee-Up for Disabilities Golf Tournament is the main source<\/p>\n

of financial support for the adult recreational programs. A variety of<\/p>\n

tournament sponsorships are available to anyone interested in supporting<\/p>\n

the programs.<\/p>\n

Karol Colbert, vice-president of the C. Louis Meyer Rehabilitation Foundation,<\/p>\n

Inc., is a parent of two special needs children. When you have a child<\/p>\n

with a disability who requires constant care and attention, nothing is<\/p>\n

more important for your own mental and physical well being than having<\/p>\n

the ability to rest and relax knowing that your child is safe in a place<\/p>\n

where they are not just receiving the proper supervised care and attention,<\/p>\n

but are also having fun in an environment where they are truly welcomed<\/p>\n

and loved, Colbert said. The services provided at the Munroe-Meyer Institute<\/p>\n

are my light at the end of a long tunnel.<\/p>\n

The not-for-profit C. Louis Meyer Foundation supports programs at MMI.<\/p>\n

For 10 years, the foundation has funded Munroe-Meyer Institute Recreational<\/p>\n

Therapy Adult Respite and Habilitation programs. Without these programs,<\/p>\n

many parents and caregivers of adults with disabilities would lose their<\/p>\n

only source of safe, supervised care for their loved ones.<\/p>\n

Ive been volunteering and working with the program for eight years<\/p>\n

and I love it, said Rick Boldt, president of the foundation, volunteer<\/p>\n

and co-chair of the tournament. The time I have spent with these remarkable<\/p>\n

individuals has shown me that all they truly desire is to have even a small<\/p>\n

piece of what we take for granted every day — to be respected, to develop<\/p>\n

long term friendships and have a feeling of self worth and involvement<\/p>\n

in the community. I can say that the time that I have spent volunteering<\/p>\n

with these adults has really touched my heart.<\/p>\n

Registration for the golf tournament will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed<\/p>\n

by a clinic at 11 a.m. and shotgun start at noon. The event is a four-person<\/p>\n

best ball, 18-hole tournament. Cost for the tournament per person is $100,<\/p>\n

which includes hole prizes, door prizes, raffle, refreshment cart and dinner.<\/p>\n

Omaha golf legend, Susan Marchese, and Professional Golf Association teaching<\/p>\n

pro Steve Hogan, will be hosting golf clinics before the tournament.<\/p>\n
