{"id":47561,"date":"2003-09-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2003-09-15T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2003\/09\/15\/unmc-receives-10-6-million-grant-from-nih-to-studygenes-in-neurosensory-systems\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T10:43:37","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T15:43:37","slug":"unmc-receives-10-6-million-grant-from-nih-to-studygenes-in-neurosensory-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2003\/09\/15\/unmc-receives-10-6-million-grant-from-nih-to-studygenes-in-neurosensory-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC receives $10.6 million grant from NIH to study\n\ngenes in neurosensory systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>The University of Nebraska Medical Center learned today that it has<\/p>\n<p>been awarded a five-year grant totaling more than $10.6 million from the<\/p>\n<p>National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study genes in neurosensory systems.<\/p>\n<p>The grant  the largest ever received by UNMC  was funded through the<\/p>\n<p>Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (CoBRE) program, which is supported<\/p>\n<p>by the NIH.<\/p>\n<p>We are tremendously pleased that we have been awarded this grant,<\/p>\n<p>UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D. said. The grant went through an<\/p>\n<p>extremely competitive process by the National Institutes of Health and<\/p>\n<p>was selected because of its promise to humanity. I could not be more pleased.<\/p>\n<p>Through the grant support, UNMC will form a research center to study<\/p>\n<p>the relationships between neurosensory conditions and specific genes or<\/p>\n<p>gene pathways, including disorders of vision and hearing, as well as touch<\/p>\n<p>and balance.<\/p>\n<p>Shelley Smith, Ph.D, director of the UNMC Center for Molecular Genetics,<\/p>\n<p>is the principal investigator for the grant and will direct the Nebraska<\/p>\n<p>Center for Molecular Biology of Neurosensory Systems.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Smith said the COBRE grant for the Nebraska Center for Molecular<\/p>\n<p>Biology of Neurosensory Systems will involve four research projects at<\/p>\n<p>three different institutions  UNMC, Creighton University and Boys Town<\/p>\n<p>National Research Hospital. Three core facilities  all established through<\/p>\n<p>the Center for Human Molecular Genetics at UNMC  are part of the COBRE<\/p>\n<p>grant, as well, Dr. Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>In one research project, a team of UNMC researchers will study the genes<\/p>\n<p>in the auditory system that respond to alcohol exposure in fetal alcohol<\/p>\n<p>syndrome. Other studies will involve the effect of growth factors on the<\/p>\n<p>development of nerve connections to the skin, genetic factors that protect<\/p>\n<p>against viral infections of the nervous system, and the development and<\/p>\n<p>maintenance of balance in aging adults.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the size of this grant, the proposal underwent enormous<\/p>\n<p>review, said Thomas Rosenquist, Ph.D, vice chancellor for research at<\/p>\n<p>UNMC. These (CoBRE) grants are highly competitive because theyre so big<\/p>\n<p>and because theyre extraordinarily valuable to the state.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel said the award reflects the confidence placed<\/p>\n<p>in UNMC by the NIH.<\/p>\n<p>Todays announcement is testament to the world-class work that is taking<\/p>\n<p>place at UNMC, Hagel said. Nebraskans and this country greatly benefit<\/p>\n<p>from UNMCs cutting-edge work.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson said it is no surprise that UNMC is recognized<\/p>\n<p>as a preeminent institution by its peers.<\/p>\n<p>NIH has recognized the cutting-edge work, the superiority of facilities<\/p>\n<p>and the leading minds at UNMC by awarding this important biomedical research<\/p>\n<p>grant, Nelson said. UNMC&#8217;s work in this field will bring about advancements<\/p>\n<p>in health technology, treatment options and new perspectives in addressing<\/p>\n<p>medical challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Congressman Lee Terry, who represents the Second District, in which<\/p>\n<p>UNMCs main campus resides, said the grant announcement is tremendous news<\/p>\n<p>for UNMC and all of Nebraska.<\/p>\n<p>We can be proud that UNMC has again been recognized for its ground-breaking<\/p>\n<p>research, which provides real returns to every resident of our state,<\/p>\n<p>Terry said. The fact that other local institutions &#8212; such as Creighton<\/p>\n<p>University and Boys Town National Research Hospital &#8212; will take part in<\/p>\n<p>the research spurred by this grant is proof of the significant medical<\/p>\n<p>expertise in Nebraska.<\/p>\n<p>The four research projects are all led by junior scientists. The intent<\/p>\n<p>of the COBRE program is that the junior scientists would use the funding<\/p>\n<p>for two to three years, after which they would make a case for independent<\/p>\n<p>NIH funding. At that time, additional researchers would use the COBRE funds<\/p>\n<p>to begin their own projects. By the end of the five-year COBRE grant, those<\/p>\n<p>projects should compete for their own funding, as well.<\/p>\n<p>We hope to end up with a core of good scientists who can get competitive<\/p>\n<p>funding and keep the center going, Dr. Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, she said, patients who suffer from the illnesses and diseases<\/p>\n<p>being studied will benefit.<\/p>\n<p>If we can get at the genetic issues, well understand the clinical<\/p>\n<p>conditions better and be able to get at them, Dr. Smith said.
