Three physicians have joined University Medical Associates, the faculty<\/p>\n

group practice associated with the University of Nebraska Medical Center.<\/p>\n

They also will hold faculty appointments at UNMC.<\/p>\n

The three include: Peter Chilian, M.D., and David Faust, M.D., UNMC<\/p>\n

Department of Anesthesiology; and Janet Merfield, M.D., UNMC Department<\/p>\n

of Radiation Oncology.<\/p>\n

Dr. Chilian, M.D., an anesthesiologist, provides patient care at <\/p>\n

Nebraska Health System University Hospital. He was named associate professor<\/p>\n

in the anesthesiology department.<\/p>\n

Dr. Chilian earned his bachelors degree in 1969 from Stanford University<\/p>\n

and his medical degree in 1973 from the University of Colorado in Denver.<\/p>\n

He did his surgical internship at the University of Colorado Affiliated<\/p>\n

Hospitals and his anesthesiology residency training at UNMC.<\/p>\n

Dr. Faust, an anesthesiologist, practices at NHS University Hospital.<\/p>\n

He was named associate professor in the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology.<\/p>\n

Dr. Faust earned a bachelors degree in chemistry in 1972 at Westmar<\/p>\n

College in LeMars, Iowa and his medical degree from the University of Iowa<\/p>\n

in Iowa City in 1975. He completed his internship and anesthesiology residency<\/p>\n

at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.<\/p>\n

Dr. Merfeld, a radiation oncologist, practices at NHS Clarkson Hospital<\/p>\n

on the UNMC campus and at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Iowa. She was<\/p>\n

named assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Radiation Oncology.<\/p>\n

She earned her bachelors degree in nutrition in 1976 from Iowa State<\/p>\n

University in Ames and a masters degree in nutrition education in 1982<\/p>\n

from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. In 1988, she earned her medical<\/p>\n

degree from Creighton University. She completed her internship and radiation<\/p>\n

oncology residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals<\/p>\n

in Milwaukee.<\/p>\n

The UMA physician group includes nearly 350 physicians. In partnership<\/p>\n

with NHS, these physicians offer services in 50 specialties and sub-specialties<\/p>\n

ranging from family medicine to transplantation and provide outpatient<\/p>\n

care at UNMC and in 13 neighborhood health care centers throughout the<\/p>\n

Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education and patient care and outreach,<\/p>\n

UNMC has established itself as one of the country’s leading centers for<\/p>\n

cancer research and treatment and solid organ transplantation. More than<\/p>\n

$34 million in research grants and contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists<\/p>\n

annually. In addition, UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for<\/p>\n

training more health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other<\/p>\n

institution.<\/p>\n
