<\/p>\n

The University of Nebraska Medical Center will host a series<\/p>\n

of speakers whose presentations will focus on outcomes research,<\/p>\n

a method by which the effectiveness of health-care delivery<\/p>\n

systems can be measured in terms of cost-effectiveness. <\/p>\n

The lectures will be held on UNMC’s Omaha campus and<\/p>\n

broadcast live to sites in Lincoln, Grand Island, Kearney and<\/p>\n

Scottsbluff.<\/p>\n

Outcomes research includes measuring the effectiveness of a<\/p>\n

new treatment for kidney disease, said Keith Mueller, Ph.D.,<\/p>\n

professor and chief of preventive and societal medicine. For<\/p>\n

example, the new treatment would be measured by the health of the<\/p>\n

patient, then compared with an existing treatment. The cost of<\/p>\n

the new treatment would also be analyzed to determine whether or<\/p>\n

not it represents a worthy investment.<\/p>\n

The following is a list of the speakers:<\/p>\n

• March 5 —<\/b> Robert Kane, M.D., professor,<\/p>\n

division of health services research and policy, and director of<\/p>\n

the Clinical Outcomes Research Center at the University of<\/p>\n

Minnesota. Dr. Kane’s presentation is titled, "The<\/p>\n

Design of Effective Outcomes Research."<\/p>\n

• March 31 —<\/b> Deborah Freund, Ph.D., vice<\/p>\n

chancellor for academic affairs and director of the Bowen<\/p>\n

Research Center at the University of Indiana. Dr. Freund’s<\/p>\n

presentation is titled, "Outcomes Research: Experiences of a<\/p>\n

Patient Outcomes Research Team."<\/p>\n

• April 7 —<\/b> Mark Chassin, M.D., chair, department<\/p>\n

of health policy, senior vice president<\/p>\n

for clinical quality at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.<\/p>\n

Dr. Chassin’s presentation is titled, "Quality<\/p>\n

Improvement and Outcomes Research: Making a Difference in<\/p>\n

Clinical Practice."<\/p>\n

• Sept. 15 —<\/b> David Nash, M.D., director of the<\/p>\n

offi ce of health policy and clinical outcomes at Thomas<\/p>\n

Jefferson University Hospital, and associate dean for health<\/p>\n

policy at Jefferson Medical College. Dr. Nash’s presentation<\/p>\n

is titled, "Maintaining a Successful Outcomes Assessment and<\/p>\n

Research Program."<\/p>\n

• Oct. 20 —<\/b> Brent James, M.D., executive director<\/p>\n

for the Institute for Health Care Delivery Research at<\/p>\n

InterMountain Health Care. Dr. James’ presentation is<\/p>\n

titled, "Using Clinical Evidence to Establish and Follow<\/p>\n

Best Practices."<\/p>\n

The speakers will present in UNMC’s Eppley Science Hall<\/p>\n

Amphitheater in Omaha at noon. In addition, the sessions will be<\/p>\n

broadcast live at noon in Lincoln, Grand Island, Kearney and in<\/p>\n

Scottsbluff at 11 a.m. The presentations will be broadcast to the<\/p>\n

following locations:<\/p>\n

Lincoln —<\/b> Noon, UN-L Campus Television, Channel 3;<\/p>\n

Noon, Nebraska State Government Television System, Channel 4;<\/p>\n

Noon, UNMC College of Dentistry, Room 11;<\/p>\n

Kearney <\/b>— Noon, Rural Health Education Distance<\/p>\n

Learning Center at UNK, Room 101;<\/p>\n

Grand Island —<\/b> Noon, College Park;<\/p>\n

Scottsbluff —<\/b> 11 a.m., Panhandle Education Center,<\/p>\n

Room 205.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the<\/p>\n

centers for cancer research and treatment and solid organ<\/p>\n

transplantation. More than $25 million in research grants and<\/p>\n
