The University of Nebraska Medical Center and Johns Hopkins<\/p>\n

University are the only two institutions in the nation to receive<\/p>\n

a Special Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) grant from the<\/p>\n

National Cancer Institute to investigate gastrointestinal cancer.<\/p>\n

Through the $4.4 million SPORE grant, basic and clinical<\/p>\n

researchers from the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center will collaborate<\/p>\n

with peers from Creighton University and the Creighton Cancer<\/p>\n

Center to explore new strategies for the prevention, early<\/p>\n

detection and treatment of pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n

The UNMC Eppley Cancer Center grant is the only SPORE award to<\/p>\n

emphasize research into pancreatic cancer — one of the most<\/p>\n

difficult cancers to survive. For all stages of the disease<\/p>\n

combined, the one-year survival rate is just 20 percent. The<\/p>\n

five-year survival rate is 4 percent.<\/p>\n

The cancer is hard to detect because symptoms generally do not<\/p>\n

occur until the disease is advanced. Little is known about its<\/p>\n

causes, and consequently, how to prevent it. Finally, pancreatic<\/p>\n

cancer is aggressive.<\/p>\n

Margaret Tempero, M.D., interim director of the UNMC Eppley<\/p>\n

Cancer Center, lauded the <\/p>\n

potential of the grant. The grant gives researchers freedom in<\/p>\n

designing their projects and in use of their money. The grant<\/p>\n

also encourages collaboration with other institutions and<\/p>\n

initiation of more projects not originally outlined in their<\/p>\n

grant application.<\/p>\n

"The SPORE grant offers great opportunities and<\/p>\n

flexibility," said Dr. Tempero, who also is the chief<\/p>\n

investigator of the grant. "The grant allows us to do things<\/p>\n

we couldn’t do with other National Institutes of Health<\/p>\n

funding. Specifically, it allows us to change directions in our<\/p>\n

research <\/p>\n

and provides career development funds to attract other<\/p>\n

investigators."<\/p>\n

Ultimately, the grant is designed to generate further research<\/p>\n

ideas.<\/p>\n

"The SPORE grant doesn’t fit the model of typical<\/p>\n

research," said Andrew Chiardo, chief of the Organ Systems<\/p>\n

Coordinating Branch in the Cancer Therapy, Diagnosis and Centers<\/p>\n

Division of the NCI. "Typical research is<\/p>\n

hypothesis-testing. SPORE grant research is<\/p>\n

hypothesis-generating."<\/p>\n

Among the projects funded under the SPORE grant is the<\/p>\n

investigation of a new strategy for treating pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n

The therapy is focused on developing antibodies that are<\/p>\n

attracted to antigens produced by cancerous tumors, thereby<\/p>\n

allowing the antibodies to attack the tumors.<\/p>\n

"We’re using biology and traditional therapy,"<\/p>\n

Dr. Tempero said. "By attaching a radioactive particle to an<\/p>\n

antibody, the antibody serves as a homing device searching for<\/p>\n

the tumor-associated antigen and treating the tumor with<\/p>\n

radiation."<\/p>\n

"Patients with pancreatic cancer have elevated levels of<\/p>\n

a hormone called amylin, which is released from the pancreatic<\/p>\n

islet cells that make insulin," said Tom Adrian, Ph.D.,<\/p>\n

professor of biomedical sciences at Creighton University.<\/p>\n

"We will work to identify the cancer cell factor responsible<\/p>\n

for increased amylin production and investigate whether this<\/p>\n

factor or amylin itself are valuable as early diagnostic<\/p>\n

indicators of this devastating cancer."<\/p>\n

Other projects funded by the grant include developing and<\/p>\n

testing tumor vaccines, examining the formation of pancreatic<\/p>\n

tumors and studying the role of smoking in the development of<\/p>\n

pancreatic tumors.<\/p>\n

In addition, researchers will gather molecular genetic data on<\/p>\n

families that show a proclivity toward developing pancreatic<\/p>\n

cancer, according to Henry T. Lynch, M.D., director of<\/p>\n

Creighton’s Cancer Center and professor and chair of<\/p>\n

preventive medicine and public health at Creighton. The group<\/p>\n

also will create a national familial pancreatic cancer registry<\/p>\n

and will conduct studies on the molecular genetics of the<\/p>\n

disease.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the<\/p>\n

state. Through its commitment to research, education and patient<\/p>\n

care, UNMC has established itself as one of the country’s leading<\/p>\n

centers for cancer research and treatment and solid organ<\/p>\n

transplantation. More than $25 million in research grants and<\/p>\n

contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually. In addition,<\/p>\n

UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for training more<\/p>\n

health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other<\/p>\n
