University of Nebraska Medical Center medical students will<\/p>\n

host National Primary Care Day Thursday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. to<\/p>\n

3 p.m. The purpose of the fourth annual event is to educate<\/p>\n

first- and second-year UNMC medical students on the fields of<\/p>\n

primary care and encourage students to choose primary care as a<\/p>\n

practice.<\/p>\n

Primary care includes family medicine, pediatrics,<\/p>\n

obstetrics\/gynecology and internal medicine. The primary care<\/p>\n

physician, commonly called a generalist or family doctor, sees<\/p>\n

adults and children with a broad range of health problems.<\/p>\n

Primary care also includes the management of acute and chronic<\/p>\n

illnesses, prevention, counseling and referrals to specialists.<\/p>\n

Primary care physicians are in high demand in Nebraska,<\/p>\n

especially in many rural areas where there is a shortage of<\/p>\n

physicians. U.S. health experts agree that primary care<\/p>\n

physicians should make up the majority of physicians. In the past<\/p>\n

25 years, the nation’s total supply of primary care physicians<\/p>\n

decreased to about 30 percent of the workforce, according to the<\/p>\n

Association of American Medical Colleges.<\/p>\n

Organizers of National Primary Care Day at UNMC are<\/p>\n

second-year medical students, Kristin Warner of Papillion, and<\/p>\n

Cori Kolder of Columbus.<\/p>\n

National Primary Care Day activities planned at UNMC for<\/p>\n

Thursday, Oct. 2:<\/b><\/p>\n

• 10 – 10:50 a.m.<\/b> — Keynote speaker Dan Dietrich,<\/p>\n

M.D., family physician, will talk about care of Omaha’s<\/p>\n

underserved (those with financial, transportation or language<\/p>\n

barriers that limit their accessibility to health care services)<\/p>\n

• 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.<\/b> — a panel of faculty will<\/p>\n

talk about why they chose primary care and the challenges of<\/p>\n

primary care<\/p>\n

• 12:15 – 12:30 p.m.<\/b> — Presentation on the new<\/p>\n

UNMC student-run health center in South Omaha <\/p>\n

• 12:30 – 4 p.m.<\/b> — Students will get hands-on<\/p>\n

training in basic laboratory medical tests <\/p>\n

"UNMC is training Nebraskans to fill the need for primary<\/p>\n

care physicians in rural areas," said Kolder. "As<\/p>\n

medical students, we are trying to get first- and second-year<\/p>\n

students to think about primary care as a medical career by<\/p>\n

making students aware of the value of primary care physicians and<\/p>\n

by providing information about the range of career opportunities<\/p>\n

available to them." The number of students choosing primary<\/p>\n

care now is increasing due to the efforts of medical<\/p>\n

-more-<\/p>\n

schools across the U.S. UNMC has been involved for decades in<\/p>\n

trying to increase the number of students choosing primary care.<\/p>\n

In March, 63 percent of UNMC senior medical students entered<\/p>\n

primary care residencies, according to Harold M. Maurer, M.D.,<\/p>\n

dean of the UNMC College of Medicine. In 1994, it was 44 percent.<\/p>\n

UNMC’s goal is to have more than half of its graduating<\/p>\n

medical students choose primary care fields.<\/p>\n

UNMC currently is ranked 25th out of 125 medical schools in<\/p>\n

the nation in the number of medical residents choosing primary<\/p>\n

care as their field of medicine, according to Robert Bowman,<\/p>\n

M.D., UNMC family medicine department. More than 70 percent of<\/p>\n

family physicians practicing in Nebraska graduated from UNMC.<\/p>\n

UNMC curriculum and clinical experiences are designed to<\/p>\n

increase interest in primary care and in rural health careers.<\/p>\n

Every year, 220 UNMC medical students are required to work with<\/p>\n

physicians for three weeks in rural Nebraska as part of their<\/p>\n

educational requirements.<\/p>\n

The student rotations are part of the UNMC Rural Health<\/p>\n

Education Network (RHEN), an innovative program developed to help<\/p>\n

address the shortage of health professionals in rural Nebraska.<\/p>\n

UNMC continues to work with state agencies and communities across<\/p>\n

Nebraska to reduce the shortages of physicians and health<\/p>\n

professionals in Nebraska.<\/p>\n

Primary Care Day is sponsored by the American Medical Student<\/p>\n

Association, as well as other national medical associations.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the<\/p>\n

state. Through its commitment to research, education and patient<\/p>\n

care, UNMC has established itself as one of the country’s leading<\/p>\n

centers for cancer research and treatment and solid organ<\/p>\n

transplantation. Nearly $25 million in research grants and<\/p>\n

contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually. In addition,<\/p>\n

UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for training more<\/p>\n

health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other<\/p>\n

institution.<\/p>\n
