Dr. Hinrichs is director of the University of Nebraska Center<\/p>\n<p>for Biosecurity and professor in the department of pathology and microbiology<\/p>\n<p>at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>A great deal of progress has been made this year and much of it is due to<\/p>\n<p>   contributions by leaders in Nebraska, including the governor and our<\/p>\n<p>congressional delegation, said UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D.<\/p>\n<p>We also are very pleased with the support provided by the business community.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;At the meeting, Dr. Hinrichs highlighted a variety of bioterrorism-related<\/p>\n<p>projects involving the University of Nebraska, the U.S. Department of Homeland<\/p>\n<p>Security (DHS), the Nebraska Health and Human Services System (HHSS) and<\/p>\n<p>private business.<\/p>\n<p>Nebraska has been unique in that it has had tremendous collaboration<\/p>\n<p>among government, academia and the private business sector, Dr. Hinrichs<\/p>\n<p>said. This collaboration has received much attention and is now being<\/p>\n<p>referred to as the Nebraska Model.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, DHS announced the University of Nebraska was one of 12 universities<\/p>\n<p>(out of 72) invited to submit a full grant proposal for a university-based<\/p>\n<p>research center related to the economic consequences of terrorism. The<\/p>\n<p>$12 million grant would examine the concept that alternative strategies<\/p>\n<p>can be developed to minimize the economic impact of terrorist attacks on<\/p>\n<p>the transportation and supply distribution infrastructure of the United<\/p>\n<p>States. It would be housed at the University of Nebraskas Peter Kiewit<\/p>\n<p>Institute, located at the University of Nebraska at Omahas south campus,<\/p>\n<p>under principal investigator Gerald Wagner, Ph.D., of the UNO College of<\/p>\n<p>Information Science and Technology<\/p>\n<p>Richard Raymond, M.D., chief medical officer for&nbsp; Nebraska HHSS,<\/p>\n<p>spoke about the combined efforts of HHSS and the university. &quot;This partnership<\/p>\n<p>  has benefited all Nebraskans,&quot; Raymond said. &quot;It has put us on the national<\/p>\n<p>  map.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>We have been very successful in developing university projects that<\/p>\n<p>have received or will be receiving federal funding in cooperation with<\/p>\n<p>the Nebraska HHSS, Dr. Hinrichs said.<\/p>\n<p>Listed below are some of the units which have received project funding:<\/p>\n<p>&middot; The Nebraska Public Health Laboratory;<\/p>\n<p>&middot; The UNL Center for Advanced Land Management and Information<\/p>\n<p>Technology;<\/p>\n<p>&middot; The Health Professions Tracking Center at UNMC;<\/p>\n<p>&middot; The UNO Aviation Institute;<\/p>\n<p>&middot; The Nebraska Center for Bioterrorism Education;<\/p>\n<p>&middot; A UNK chemistry laboratory will house special equipment acquired<\/p>\n<p>by the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency for the identification of potential<\/p>\n<p>chemical agents;<\/p>\n<p>&middot; A high-risk isolation facility at UNMC.<\/p>\n<p>The university continues to seek designation by the U.S. Centers for Disease<\/p>\n<p>Control and Prevention (CDC) as a national bioterrorism preparedness center.<\/p>\n<p>  The university has received additional federal funding in the<\/p>\n<p>    form of<\/p>\n<p>  a Department of Defense appropriations bill that provides $2.5 million<\/p>\n<p>  for UNMC to take its clinical laboratory automation technology to the next<\/p>\n<p>  level. The allocation to UNMC would be used to develop portable and networked<\/p>\n<p>  automation testing technology that would efficiently and rapidly process<\/p>\n<p>  specimens to detect the existence of biological agents in the event of<\/p>\n<p>  a biological attack.<\/p>\n<p>UNMC recently received a two-year, $650,000 federal grant from the Health<\/p>\n<p>Resources Services Administration (HRSA) to develop a bioterrorism-related<\/p>\n<p>curriculum, which will benefit all UNMC students and may be used by students<\/p>\n<p>nationally.
