Howard E. Gendelman M.D., has been named the David T. Purtilo<\/p>\n

Distinguished Professor of Pathology and Microbiology at the<\/p>\n

University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Gendelman serves as<\/p>\n

director of the Center for Neurovirology and Neurodegenerative<\/p>\n

Diseases. He also is a professor of pathology and microbiology,<\/p>\n

internal medicine and psychiatry.<\/p>\n

Dr. Gendelman graduated with honors in Russian studies and<\/p>\n

natural sciences from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa.,<\/p>\n

before earning his medical degree from Pennsylvania State<\/p>\n

University in Hershey, Pa., in 1979. He completed his residency<\/p>\n

in internal medicine at the Montefiore Hospital Center at the<\/p>\n

Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, N.Y., in 1982, and<\/p>\n

his fellowship in neurology at the Johns Hopkins University<\/p>\n

Hospital in Baltimore.<\/p>\n

He joined UNMC in 1993 after occupying positions at Johns<\/p>\n

Hopkins University, the National Institute of Allergy and<\/p>\n

Infectious Disease in Bethesda, Md., and the Walter Reed Army<\/p>\n

Institute of Research in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

Dr. Gendelman has authored more than 140 publications and<\/p>\n

edited a major textbook on the neurology of AIDS. He is a<\/p>\n

distinguished scholar known for contributions to the biology and<\/p>\n

treatment of AIDS associated brain diseases. He serves on<\/p>\n

numerous editorial boards including the Journal of the American<\/p>\n

Medical Association, the Scientific Advisory Committee for the<\/p>\n

American Foundation for AIDS Research and on other national and<\/p>\n

international scientific committees. He is the associate editor<\/p>\n

of the Journal of Neurovirology and the past editor of the<\/p>\n

Journal of Leukocyte Biology.<\/p>\n

Dr. Gendelman’s other honors include the Henry L. Moses<\/p>\n

Award in Basic Science, the Leo M. Davidoff Society Award for<\/p>\n

research and outstanding teaching achievement from the Albert<\/p>\n

Einstein College of Medicine, and the Carter-Wallace Fellow for<\/p>\n

Distinction in AIDS Research.<\/p>\n

Dr. Gendelman has brought in more than $11 million in research<\/p>\n

grants to UNMC during the past three years and currently brings<\/p>\n

in more research dollars from the National Institutes of Health<\/p>\n

than any other UNMC investigator.<\/p>\n

"Dr. Purtilo was known for his compassion toward those in<\/p>\n

need, and Dr. Gendelman is likewise a very caring individual. His<\/p>\n

boundless energy, infectious enthusiasm, brilliant research and<\/p>\n

vision for neuroscience at UNMC honor the vision and memory of<\/p>\n

Dr. Purtilo," said Samuel M. Cohen, M.D., Ph.D., chairman<\/p>\n

and professor of pathology and microbiology. "We are pleased<\/p>\n

to honor him with this important position."<\/p>\n

The David T. Purtilo Distinguished Professorship is awarded to<\/p>\n

an outstanding UNMC leader whose work ethic, vision and research<\/p>\n

mirrors that of Dr. Purtilo’s, Dr. Cohen said. <\/p>\n

Dr. Purtilo joined UNMC in 1981 as professor and chairman of<\/p>\n

pathology and microbiology. He is best known for discovering<\/p>\n

Duncan’s Disease, a rare genetic disease which was later<\/p>\n

named X-linked lymphoproliferative disease (XLP). Dr. Purtilo<\/p>\n

died suddenly of a stroke in 1992 at the age of 53 while in<\/p>\n

Naples, Fla., where he had made a presentation at the American<\/p>\n

Association for Cancer Research conference.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the<\/p>\n

state. Through its commitment to research, education and patient<\/p>\n

care, UNMC has established itself as one of the country’s leading<\/p>\n

centers for cancer research and treatment and solid organ<\/p>\n

transplantation. More than $25 million in research grants and<\/p>\n

contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually. In addition,<\/p>\n

UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for training more<\/p>\n

health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other<\/p>\n
