Twenty children and teenagers ages eight through 17 are needed
\nto participate in a research study of obsessive-compulsive
\ndisorder. Study participants are needed who are not currently on
\nmedication or are willing to discontinue their current
\nmedication. Both the child and parent must be willing to
\nparticipate. Medication, laboratory tests and treatment during
\nthe study are free.<\/p>\n

The combined psychiatry department of the University of
\nNebraska Medical Center and Creighton University are
\nparticipating in a study that will measure the effectiveness of a
\ndrug that controls the disorder.<\/p>\n

Recent surveys estimate that as many as one in 40 people in
\nthe U.S. may have the disorder, but the disorder is difficult to
\ndetect if it is hidden from others. The disorder can be so severe
\nthat the sufferer does nothing but perform compulsive rituals
\nthroughout the day.<\/p>\n

"Most people don’t think of children and teenagers as
\nhaving these types of diseases," said Bert Quintana, M.D.,
\ndirector of child and adolescent services, Creighton-Nebraska
\nDepartment of Psychiatry. "In fact, more research is
\nsuggesting that these diseases may begin in childhood or
\nadolescence."<\/p>\n

Dr. Quintana and colleagues, Christopher Kratochvil, M.D. and
\nSheila Bierman, M.D., child psychiatrists, Creighton-Nebraska
\nDepartment of Psychiatry, will conduct the study.<\/p>\n

Symptoms of obsessions include one or more of the following:
\nconcern with dirt, germs or environmental toxins; fear of harming
\noneself or others; fear of something terrible happening;
\nforbidden, aggressive or perverse sexual thoughts; images or
\nimpulses; concern with order and exactness; and intrusive
\nnonsense sounds, words or music.<\/p>\n

Compulsions include: excessive or ritualized handwashing,
\nshowering, bathing, toothbrushing or grooming; repeating rituals
\nsuch as going in and out of a door or up or down from a chair;
\nchecking doors, locks, stove, emergency brake on car, etc.;
\nmeasures to prevent harm to self or others; ordering or
\narranging; counting; hoarding or collecting rituals; and rituals
\nof cleaning household or inanimate objects.<\/p>\n
