UNMC To Become Eighth U.S. Medical Center To Use Robotic<\/p>\n

Surgical Equipment<\/FONT><\/B><\/p>\n

The University of Nebraska Medical Center soon will be the eighth medical<\/p>\n

center in the United States to use robotic surgical equipment that allows<\/p>\n

patients less surgical trauma, shorter hospital stays, and faster rehabilitation<\/p>\n

and recovery.<\/p>\n

We are excited about this new innovation in surgery which will place<\/p>\n

us at the cutting edge of robotics with this technology, said Chancellor<\/p>\n

Harold M. Maurer, M.D. Our already superior surgery faculty members now<\/p>\n

will be positioned to become leaders in this technology.<\/p>\n

UNMC purchased the robotic equipment with critical support from Charles<\/p>\n

Durham and his late wife, Margre, who gave a major private donation a few<\/p>\n

years ago to benefit three areas: arthritis, prostate cancer and minimally<\/p>\n

invasive surgery.<\/p>\n

We are extremely fortunate to be the recipient of the Durhams generosity. <\/p>\n

Their vision for the Medical Center is gratifying, Dr. Maurer said. With<\/p>\n

this kind of private support, the Medical Center will achieve its vision<\/p>\n

to rank among the best.<\/p>\n

The da Vinci Surgical System, which UNMC surgeons will begin using to<\/p>\n

operate on patients later this summer, represents the next big leap in<\/p>\n

minimally invasive abdominal surgical equipment, said Byers Shaw Jr., M.D.,<\/p>\n

chairman of surgery at UNMC and a Nebraska Health System liver transplant<\/p>\n

surgeon.<\/p>\n

The laparoscopic field has been waiting for several years for the technological<\/p>\n

development that would be the next big leap in these surgical procedures,<\/p>\n

Dr. Shaw said. This da Vinci system, with its computer-enhanced technology,<\/p>\n

represents a significant breakthrough.<\/p>\n

The da Vinci Surgical System, developed by Intuitive Surgical Inc.,<\/p>\n

is the only FDA-cleared, complete robotic surgical system commercially<\/p>\n

available in the United States.<\/p>\n

Its use in the United States began at Ohio State University in August<\/p>\n

1999. Other U.S. medical centers with the da Vinci? system include East<\/p>\n

Carolina Medical Center, Greenville, N.C.; Henrico Doctors Hospital, Richmond,<\/p>\n

Va.; Brigham and Womens Hospital, Boston; Beth Israel Medical Center;<\/p>\n

New York City; San Ramon Regional Medical Center, San Ramon, Calif.; Providence<\/p>\n

St. Vincent, Portland, Ore.; and Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas.<\/p>\n

St. Vincents da Vinci? training came a week after the training at UNMC.<\/p>\n

The da Vinci Surgical System consists of a surgeon’s viewing\/control<\/p>\n

console that has an integrated, high-performance 3-D vision system; a patient-side<\/p>\n

cart consisting of three robotic arms that position and precisely maneuver<\/p>\n

endoscopic instruments and an endoscope; and a variety of articulating<\/p>\n

surgical instruments.<\/p>\n

The system translates the surgeons hand, wrist and finger movements<\/p>\n

into corresponding movements of the instrument tips positioned inside the<\/p>\n

patient. Using the robot, the surgeon needs to make only tiny incisions,<\/p>\n

or ports, in the patient, instead of a longer incision needed for conventional<\/p>\n

surgeries.<\/p>\n

Dr. Shaw said he was skeptical of the system until he used it during<\/p>\n

a demonstration at Intuitives headquarters in Mountain View, Calif.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, the light went on, Dr. Shaw said. I began thinking, This<\/p>\n

thing has tremendous potential to revolutionize many surgical procedures.<\/p>\n

Several UNMC surgeons have trained on the da Vinci? system since it<\/p>\n

arrived in Omaha in early July. Surgeons must demonstrate several required<\/p>\n

skills on the robotic system before they are certified.<\/p>\n

Among the first UNMC surgeries using the new equipment will be bile<\/p>\n

duct reconstruction and morbid obesity surgery. The new equipment, Dr.<\/p>\n

Shaw said, may open the door for many other procedures.<\/p>\n

Almost any surgery that we currently cannot do or can’t do well with<\/p>\n

laparoscopes may now be candidates for reconsideration with this device,<\/p>\n

Dr. Shaw said.<\/p>\n

The robotic systems impact will be felt on a couple of levels at UNMC,<\/p>\n

Dr. Shaw said.<\/p>\n

One, more complex surgeries will be done on the system than through<\/p>\n

traditional laparoscopic procedures. To hospital patients, the minimally<\/p>\n

invasive surgeries will have several advantages to traditional techniques.<\/p>\n

With this equipment, we hope to turn more procedures that currently<\/p>\n

require a big incision and three to seven days of recovery time into procedures<\/p>\n

that require small incisions and get people home and back on their feet<\/p>\n

much earlier, Dr. Shaw said.<\/p>\n

Also, Dr. Shaw said, the machine will foster working relationships between<\/p>\n

surgeons and other medical professionals at UNMC, as well as other university<\/p>\n

researchers, such as engineers and scientists associated with the Peter<\/p>\n

Kiewit Institute for<\/p>\n
