The foundation<br \/>\nis a new international charitable organization that encourages innovative<br \/>\nresearch in anemia.<\/p>\n<p>Incorporated in Switzerland, the foundation was established with an<br \/>\ninitial commitment from Roche of about $13.5 million over the first four<br \/>\nyears. The other seven board of trustees members are: Nathan Levin, M.D.,<br \/>\nU.S. (chair); Charles Herzog, U.S.; Adeera Levin, Canada; Jean Francois<br \/>\nMorere, France; Neil Powe, U.S.; Eberhard Ritz, Germany; and Lars Birgerson,<br \/>\nU.S.<\/p>\n<p>Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. is the U.S. prescription drug unit of the Roche<br \/>\nGroup, a leading research-based health care enterprise that ranks among<br \/>\nthe world&#8217;s leaders in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics.<\/p>\n<p>Anemia is one of the most common pathological states, Dr. Armitage<br \/>\nsaid. Its not a disease. Its a condition. There are many causes of anemia.<br \/>\nTo better understand anemia is important to help people. Research could<br \/>\nultimately make life better for a lot of people. Cancer patients also are<br \/>\naffected by anemia.<\/p>\n<p>Anemia occurs when erythropoiesis, the production of red blood cells,<br \/>\nis disturbed. Diseases of the kidney often result in impaired production<br \/>\nof red blood cells leading to anemia. Anemia in cancer patients may be<br \/>\nrelated to the disease itself or the effect of concomitant chemotherapy.<br \/>\nOne of the most common symptoms of anemia is fatigue. In some cases, anemia<br \/>\ncan be life-threatening.<\/p>\n<p>William M. Burns, head of Roche&#8217;s Pharmaceutical Division, said Roche<br \/>\ncurrently markets NeoRecormon, the leading anemia therapy in Europe and<br \/>\nis developing CERA, the first continuous erythopoiesis receptor activator<br \/>\nfor global commercialization. We are committed to improve outcomes for<br \/>\nanemia patients. This cannot be addressed by the pharmaceutical industry<br \/>\nalone, but needs the collaboration of academia and practicing physicians.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;RoFAR will stimulate new research in anemia, said Dr. Levin, medical<br \/>\n&amp; research director, Renal Research Institute, New York, and chairman<br \/>\nof the RoFAR board of trustees. Anemia can be a serious complication for<br \/>\nmany renal and oncology patients and I hope that physicians and researchers<br \/>\naround the world will seize the opportunity that RoFAR offers to become<br \/>\ninvolved in research that will help to improve our understanding of this<br \/>\ndebilitating condition.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;Established members of academic staff at universities, dialysis<br \/>\ncenters and research institutes are invited to apply to RoFAR for funding<br \/>\nin areas associated with the study of anemia related to kidney disease<br \/>\nand oncology; anemia of chronic disease; anemia related to congestive heart<br \/>\nfailure and stroke; and the effects of erythropoetic drugs on endothelium<br \/>\nand the brain.<\/p>\n<p>The first round of awards will be announced in December in San Diego<br \/>\nat the American Society of Hematology Meeting.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>James Armitage, M.D., University of Nebraska Medical Center lymphoma expert and Joe Shapiro Professor of Medicine, has joined the Roche Foundation for Anemia Research (RoFAR) as a member of the board of trustees.
