On Monday, June 8, from noon to 1 p.m., Omaha’s KIOS-FM<\/p>\n

radio station, frequency 91.5, will broadcast the Pubic Radio<\/p>\n

International program, "This American Life." A one-hour<\/p>\n

broadcast documentary titled, "Scenes from a<\/p>\n

Transplant" will be aired. It is a first-person story of<\/p>\n

Rebecca Perl’s diagnosis in 1995 and following treatment of<\/p>\n

non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.<\/p>\n

The 38-year-old wife, mother and resident of Silver Spring,<\/p>\n

Md, ultimately traveled to the University of Nebraska Medical<\/p>\n

Center in Omaha for a bone marrow transplant. Perl, a National<\/p>\n

Public Radio health science reporter, is doing well and is back<\/p>\n

to work at NPR. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a cancer of the<\/p>\n

lymph node system.<\/p>\n

Six months of chemotherapy and radiation proved unsuccessful,<\/p>\n

leaving Rebecca to face one treatment option: a lethal dose of<\/p>\n

chemotherapy followed by a life-saving bone marrow transplant at<\/p>\n

UNMC.<\/p>\n

Perl covered health and science for the Atlanta<\/p>\n

Journal-Constitution, where she won numerous awards for her<\/p>\n

coverage of mental health. In 1995 she won a Peabody Award for<\/p>\n

her coverage of the tobacco industry. <\/p>\n

Before working at NPR, Perl earned a master’s degree in<\/p>\n

journalism from Columbia University. She has been a reporter<\/p>\n

since 1987. At the time of her diagnosis she was covering managed<\/p>\n

care and consumer health issues. She entered the world she once<\/p>\n

had examined only from the outside.<\/p>\n

"As a reporter I had learned to be skeptical about<\/p>\n

medical breakthroughs and miracles," Perl said in the<\/p>\n

documentary. "But as a patient I had to be a believer."<\/p>\n

The documentary, by award-winning producer Dan Collison with<\/p>\n

help from Tom Jennings, follows Rebecca through the bone marrow<\/p>\n

transplant.<\/p>\n

Perl’s background in health and science journalism<\/p>\n

allowed her to describe her journey concisely and with clarity.<\/p>\n

She conveys a range of emotions that put a human face on the<\/p>\n

experience. "This American Life" is heard on 253 public<\/p>\n

radio stations around the country. The program is produced by<\/p>\n

WBEZ-FM, Chicago’s NPR station, and distributed by Public<\/p>\n

Radio International. Funding comes from the Corporation for<\/p>\n

Public Broadcasting, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur<\/p>\n

Foundation, DoubleTake magazine, and the listener of WBEZ-FM.<\/p>\n

Collison, producer of "Scenes from a Transplant," is<\/p>\n

an independent video and radio producer based in Silver Spring,<\/p>\n

Md. Collison has worked in public radio since 1981, including<\/p>\n

four years as senior weekend producer and editor of National<\/p>\n

Public Radio’s "All Things Considered". He is a regular<\/p>\n

contributor to NPR’s news magazine programs.<\/p>\n

Jennings, field producer of the show, has worked as a<\/p>\n

journalist for 10 years, first in print and then broadcast. He is<\/p>\n

currently with Hedrick Smith Productions, an independent<\/p>\n

production company that specializes in long-form documentaries<\/p>\n

for PBS. Most recently, Jennings was field producer for<\/p>\n

"Surviving the Bottom Line," a four-hour PBS<\/p>\n

documentary on the new economy.<\/p>\n
