<\/FONT><\/B><\/p>\n

Newly-appointed chancellor of the University of Nebraska Medical Center,<\/p>\n

Harold M. Maurer, M.D., is scheduled to visit four Nebraska communities<\/p>\n

Feb. 16 and 17, to meet with community leaders, as well as visit with high<\/p>\n

school students interested in health careers. He will also talk about UNMC<\/p>\n

and its future.<\/p>\n

Dr. Maurer will visit Red Cloud, Blue Hill, Hastings and Aurora.<\/p>\n

Dr. Maurer began his appointment as chancellor on Dec. 1, 1998. Since<\/p>\n

1993, he had served as dean of the UNMC College of Medicine. Dr. Maurer<\/p>\n

replaced William O. Berndt, Ph.D., as chancellor. Dr. Berndt had served<\/p>\n

as chancellor since 1996 and had served as interim chancellor from 1991-92.<\/p>\n

Dr. Maurer holds academic appointments in the department of pediatrics<\/p>\n

and in the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases<\/p>\n

at UNMC.<\/p>\n

From 1968 to 1993, Dr. Maurer was on the faculty of the Children Medical<\/p>\n

Center at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, serving as the Jessie<\/p>\n

Ball duPont Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics during<\/p>\n

his last nine years there. Prior to this, he served two years as chief<\/p>\n

of pediatrics for the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Norfolk, Va.,<\/p>\n

and did a two-year fellowship in pediatric cancer at Babies Hospital at<\/p>\n

Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York.<\/p>\n

A native of New York City, Dr. Maurer earned his bachelors degree from<\/p>\n

New York University and his medical degree from the State University of<\/p>\n

New York Downstate Medical Center at Brooklyn. He serves on the board of<\/p>\n

directors of Nebraska Health System and chairs the UNMC Faculty Council.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education and patient care, UNMC has<\/p>\n

established itself as one of the country’s leading centers for cancer research<\/p>\n

and treatment and solid organ transplantation. More than $34 million in<\/p>\n

research grants and contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually.<\/p>\n

In addition, UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for training more<\/p>\n

health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other institution.<\/p>\n
