The University of Nebraska Medical Center Student Association<\/p>\n

for Rural Health, made up of students from rural areas studying<\/p>\n

at UNMC, sponsored its first Rural Health Professions Career Day<\/p>\n

recently. The event targeted high school students from rural<\/p>\n

areas who are interested in careers in the health professions.<\/p>\n

About 150 high school students from 38 rural communities<\/p>\n

learned about opportunities in medicine, nursing, pharmacy,<\/p>\n

dentistry, psychology, physical therapy, medical technology and<\/p>\n

other fields. They watched presentations, visited with health<\/p>\n

professionals and toured UNMC and University Hospital.<\/p>\n

Ted Tucker, a UNMC second-year medical student from Newman<\/p>\n

Grove, and president of the organization, said the goal was to<\/p>\n

educate rural students on opportunities in the health<\/p>\n

professions. "Nebraska high school students who may be<\/p>\n

thinking about a career in medicine can benefit from this event.<\/p>\n

This type of information would have been very beneficial to me<\/p>\n

when I was going to high school."<\/p>\n

Roxanna Jokela, coordinator, UNMC Rural Health Education<\/p>\n

Network, said high school students were given a chance to find<\/p>\n

out first hand from UNMC students what they need to know about a<\/p>\n

health career and what they need to do to get prepared.<\/p>\n

"Students made the presenta-tions, and UNMC provided staff<\/p>\n

to answer some of the questions such as how to prepare<\/p>\n

them-selves academically and how to finance their<\/p>\n

education."<\/p>\n

UNMC is planning to hold the event each year, anticipating<\/p>\n

beginning this mid-October, Jokela said. Each year, 50 high<\/p>\n

schools in small communities will be notified and the selection<\/p>\n

process of inviting high school students by the schools will<\/p>\n

begin.<\/p>\n
