The UNMC Faculty Senate requires that a resolution receives a 67 percent<\/p>\n

approval vote before it can be passed. Support for the following resolution,<\/p>\n

which was approved on Monday, Dec. 6, exceeded the necessary approval.<\/p>\n

WHEREAS, the University of Nebraska Medical Center has as a major goal<\/p>\n

the improvement of the health of Nebraskans; and<\/p>\n

WHEREAS, the University of Nebraska Medical Center has as a major goal<\/p>\n

for the advancement of scientific research; and<\/p>\n

WHEREAS, improvement of health is substantially dependent upon basic<\/p>\n

research; and<\/p>\n

WHEREAS, the faculty of the University of Nebraska Medical Center seek<\/p>\n

academic freedom to pursue scientific research without undue external influence;<\/p>\n

and<\/p>\n

WHEREAS, the use of human fetal cells for research is a sensitive societal<\/p>\n

issue,<\/p>\n

Be it therefore resolved that the Faculty Senate of the University of<\/p>\n

Nebraska Medical Center:<\/p>\n

   1.   Supports faculty academic freedom to pursue<\/p>\n

scientific research; and<\/p>\n

   2.   Supports the position taken by UNMC leadership<\/p>\n

to obtain human fetal tissue for use in health sciences research from sources<\/p>\n

other than elective abortion whenever possible.<\/p>\n
