<\/FONT><\/B><\/p>\n

The University of Nebraska Medical Center is looking for volunteers<\/p>\n

who would like to participate in a medical research study to find an effective<\/p>\n

treatment for adults who want to stop smoking.<\/p>\n

Anyone between the ages of 19 to 65 who smoke at least 15 cigarettes<\/p>\n

per day is eligible for participation. Participants will receive physical<\/p>\n

exams, counseling and medications at no cost.<\/p>\n

Of the estimated 46 million Americans who smoke (about 25 percent of<\/p>\n

adults), 70 percent would like to quit. An estimated 35 percent of American<\/p>\n

smokers tried to quit in 1996.<\/p>\n

UNMC has conducted many studies on smoking cessation, including serving<\/p>\n

as a initial site for some of the first major clinical trials for the nicotine<\/p>\n

patch, nicotine gum and zyban. Researchers have found that the stop smoking<\/p>\n

aids can be very effective in helping smokers quit.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education and patient care, UNMC has<\/p>\n

established itself as one of the countrys leading centers for cancer research<\/p>\n

and treatment and solid organ transplantation. More than $34 million in<\/p>\n

research grants and contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually.<\/p>\n

In addition, UNMCs educational programs are responsible for training more<\/p>\n

health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other institution.<\/p>\n
