UNMC\/NHS South Omaha Community Care Council To Host<\/p>\n

Four Classes for Spanish-Speaking Newcomers to Omaha<\/FONT><\/B><\/p>\n

Moving to a new community can be a stressful time, especially if one<\/p>\n

doesnt know the rules and expectations.<\/p>\n

The South Omaha Community Care Council, in conjunction with  English<\/p>\n

as Second Language classes, is providing a series of classes to help new<\/p>\n

immigrants to Omaha become acclimated in the community.<\/p>\n

Often, Spanish-speaking newcomers to Omaha arent aware of such things<\/p>\n

as local laws, how to access the school system and how to find housing,<\/p>\n

said Aura Whitney-Jackson, a community liaison at the University of Nebraska<\/p>\n

Medical Center. These classes will provide them with information they<\/p>\n

need to know. Theyre a way of showing them the lay of the land.<\/p>\n

The four sessions, which begin Oct. 25, will be held at St. Anns Church,<\/p>\n

2247 Poppleton Ave. The classes run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The topics and<\/p>\n

presenters are:<\/p>\n

 –Oct. 25: Basic Law, Ofelia Robles, Omaha Police Department.<\/p>\n


 –Nov. 1: Housing, Michelle Fimbres, Family Housing Authority<\/p>\n

Services.<\/p>\n


 –Nov. 8: Education, Susan Mayberger, Omaha Public Schools<\/p>\n


 –Nov. 15: Parenting, Alberto Cervantes, UNO Family Mentoring.<\/p>\n

The South Omaha Community Care Council was formed in August 1998 and<\/p>\n

includes business leaders, educators, health-care professionals, neighborhood<\/p>\n

leaders and others who want to work with UNMC and Nebraska Health System<\/p>\n

to better the community.<\/p>\n

UNMC and NHS also sponsor the North Omaha Community Care Council, which<\/p>\n

was formed in 1996.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education, outreach<\/p>\n


and patient care, UNMC has established itself as one of the country’s<\/p>\n

leading centers for cancer research and treatment and<\/p>\n


solid organ transplantation. More than $32 million in research grants<\/p>\n

and contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually.<\/p>\n


In addition, UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for training<\/p>\n

more health professionals practicing in Nebraska than<\/p>\n
