{"id":47794,"date":"2003-09-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2003-09-03T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2003\/09\/03\/summer-program-attracts-top-high-school-students-nebraskastudents-explore-health-sciences-at-unmc\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T10:43:39","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T15:43:39","slug":"summer-program-attracts-top-high-school-students-nebraskastudents-explore-health-sciences-at-unmc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2003\/09\/03\/summer-program-attracts-top-high-school-students-nebraskastudents-explore-health-sciences-at-unmc\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer program attracts top high school students Nebraska\n\nstudents explore health sciences at UNMC"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>Eighteen high school students gained a better understanding of the opportunities<\/p>\n<p>in the health sciences by recently participating in the Summer Health Professions<\/p>\n<p>Career Workshop at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>The medical opportunities are endless, said Rachel Faust of Petersburg,<\/p>\n<p>Neb., who was among the Nebraska juniors and seniors to visit the UNMC<\/p>\n<p>campus July 30-Aug. 2.<\/p>\n<p>We always look forward to spending time with the Summer Health Professions<\/p>\n<p>Career Workshop students, said Lisa Jewell of the UNMC Youth Learning<\/p>\n<p>Center and director of the program. These students are top notch and<\/p>\n<p>come to Omaha ready to learn and ask questions.<\/p>\n<p>The program provides students with an opportunity to learn and see things<\/p>\n<p>that might not be available to them in their hometown hospitals, Jewell<\/p>\n<p>said. Some of the highlights from this years program included a tour of<\/p>\n<p>The Lied Transplant Center, visiting the College of Dentistry in Lincoln,<\/p>\n<p>engaging in a general discussion about medical school, touring the Gross<\/p>\n<p>Anatomy Lab and watching a demonstration of the DaVinci robot.<\/p>\n<p>Im glad I got to experience this workshop, not only to discover professions<\/p>\n<p>in the medical field and what theyre about, but to also meet new people,<\/p>\n<p>said Elizabeth Trampe of Lexington, Neb.<\/p>\n<p>Katie Madsen of Stuart, Neb., said she enjoyed the opportunity to explore<\/p>\n<p>health careers and the UNMC campus. John Buller of Hampton, Neb., said<\/p>\n<p>he most appreciated the hands-on experiences and the in-depth information.<\/p>\n<p>The 18 high school juniors and seniors competed for available slots<\/p>\n<p>by submitting an application and essay.
