<\/FONT><\/B><\/p>\n

 Twelve high school and junior high science teachers recently attended<\/p>\n

the second annual Teachers Connection Workshop at the University of Nebraska<\/p>\n

Medical Center held earlier this fall.<\/p>\n

 The event exposed teachers to concepts that could be taught in<\/p>\n

the classroom. For example, Robert Wickert, a medical technologist, showed<\/p>\n

teachers how to use a computer module to identify a Polymerase Chain Reaction.<\/p>\n

This technique is used to detect the presence of disease in humans. Each<\/p>\n

of the teachers received a copy of the computer module for classroom use.<\/p>\n

 Other sessions included using fluorescent light to tag DNA and<\/p>\n

identify abnormalities in the DNA chain, learning how hyperbaric chambers<\/p>\n

are used to help patients and a visit to the sleep lab.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education and patient care, UNMC has<\/p>\n

established itself as one of the country’s leading centers for cancer research<\/p>\n

and treatment and solid organ transplantation. More than $34 million in<\/p>\n

research grants and contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually.<\/p>\n

In addition, UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for training more<\/p>\n

health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other institution.<\/p>\n
