\n<\/span>The University
\nof Nebraska Medical Center has received a record $52.3 million in total
\nresearch grant funding from June 2003 through March 2004 (three fiscal
\nquarters) and is now on target to break the $60 million barrier for
\nfirst time
\nin a single fiscal year. The $16.6 million in federal research grants
\nUNMC
\nreceived during the third quarter (January, February and March) helped
\nboost
\nthe year to new heights. <\/span><\/p>\n

      
\n<\/span>“The UNMC corps
\nof researchers is showing its true excellence,” said Thomas Rosenquist,
\nPh.D.,
\nvice chancellor for research. “The growth in funding exceeds our
\nlong-range
\npredictions, but is consistent with what we have discovered recently
\nabout the
\nenergy and ability of these outstanding investigators. <\/span><\/p>\n

      
\n<\/span>“Soon, we will
\nhave filled all of the best UNMC research space, including the Durham Research Center,
\nwith NIH-funded,
\nalpha investigators. This is a great problem to have, and we hope that
\nwe will
\nhave the opportunity for adding even more 21st-century facilities, to
\nlet our
\ninvestigators realize their full potential for advancing biomedical
\nscience.”<\/span><\/p>\n

      
\n<\/span>Some of UNMC’s
\nresearch highlights during the third quarter included:<\/span><\/p>\n

      
\n<\/span>Oksana
\nLockridge, Ph.D., professor in the Eppley Institute, received $950,000
\nfor a
\nstudy dealing with molecular toxicology and identification of chemical
\nagent
\ntoxicology. Her grant is from the U.S. Department of Defense. Part of
\nthe money
\nwill be used to purchase mass spectrometers. 
\n<\/span>Mass spectrometers identify all of the proteins in the body that
\nreact
\nto organophosphorus pesticides.  <\/span>Dr.
\nLockridge’s research is aimed at being able to diagnose low dose
\nexposure and
\nunderstand illnesses such as chemical sensitivity and Gulf War Illness.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

           
\n<\/span>Timothy
\nGreiner, M.D., associate professor in the department of pathology and
\nmicrobiology, will receive $290,000 per year for three years from the
\nLymphoma
\nResearch Foundation to study mantle cell lymphoma – a form of cancer
\nthat affects
\nseveral thousand patients each year. DNA from the mantle cell tumors
\nwill be
\nanalyzed for changes in the structure. Dr. Greiner’s research team will
\ntry to determine how
\nsome genes are turned off that control the lymphoma cell growth. They
\nalso will
\nstudy methods to turn the genes back on to help current chemotherapy
\ndrugs kill the lymphoma cells. The
\noverall goal is to improve the survival of patients with mantle cell
\nlymphoma,
\nwhich on average live 3-4 years after the diagnosis of their lymphoma.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

      
\n<\/span>Pascale Lane, M.D.,
\nprofessor and associate chair for research in the department of
\npediatrics-section of nephrology, received $330,750 to study the impact
\nof
\npuberty on the kidneys in diabetes.  <\/span>Many
\nkidney disorders, including kidney disease of diabetes mellitus, get
\nworse
\nduring puberty. This project explores the role of sex steroids in this
\ndeterioration of kidney function. By understanding the reasons that
\nmaturation
\naccelerates kidney disease, Dr. Lane’s research team hopes to be able
\nto
\ndevelop new treatment options for these patients.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

      
\n<\/span>Robert Lewis,
\nPh.D., professor at the Eppley Institute, received $227,851 to identify
\nnovel
\nmechanisms inside the cell that mediate the response to insulin. The
\nresearch
\nfocuses on proteins that control the creation of adipose (fat) tissue.
\nAdipose tissue is the most insulin sensitive cell type in the body. Too
\nmuch
\nadipose tissue (obesity) is related to certain types of diabetes.  <\/span>Understanding the cellular mechanisms that
\nregulate adipose tissue formation is likely to contribute to novel
\nmethods that
\ncan reduce insulin resistance and diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

      
\n<\/span>Christopher
\nKratochvil, M.D., associate professor in the department of psychiatry,
\nreceived
\n$153,538 to study the pharmacological treatment of young children with
\nattention
\ndeficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The funding is for a second year
\nof a
\nfive-year grant supported by the National Institute of Mental Health.
\nThe goals
\nof the project are to further develop the infrastructure and ability to
\nconduct
\nclinical research in young children with mental illness and to support
\na
\nclinical trial in young children with ADHD. The clinical trial will be
\na
\nmulti-site study coordinated by UNMC and conducted at UNMC, Columbia University
\nin New York, N.Y.
\nand Duke University

\nin Durham, N.C.<\/span><\/p>\n
