{"id":47819,"date":"1998-04-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"1998-04-01T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/1998\/04\/01\/unmc-nhs-plan-tree-plantingsthroughout-the-state-to-raise-awareness-for-organ-donation\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T11:01:09","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T16:01:09","slug":"unmc-nhs-plan-tree-plantingsthroughout-the-state-to-raise-awareness-for-organ-donation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/1998\/04\/01\/unmc-nhs-plan-tree-plantingsthroughout-the-state-to-raise-awareness-for-organ-donation\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC, NHS Plan Tree Plantings\n\nThroughout the State To Raise Awareness for Organ Donation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><\/p>\n<p>A series of 22 tree plantings will be held in communities<\/p>\n<p>throughout Nebraska during the next 12 months in an effort to<\/p>\n<p>recognize organ donors and recipients while raising the awareness<\/p>\n<p>level for organ donation. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;The Tree of Life&quot; campaign is being sponsored by<\/p>\n<p>the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the Nebraska Health<\/p>\n<p>System.<\/p>\n<p>The &quot;Tree of Life&quot; symbolizes the new life organ<\/p>\n<p>donation has brought to those who were dying from end-stage organ<\/p>\n<p>failure and those who have given the &quot;gift of life.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>Ceremonies will be held this spring, fall and next spring.<\/p>\n<p>They will be held in:<\/p>\n<p>Ainsworth Beatrice Broken Bow Chadron Columbus Fremont <\/p>\n<p>Grand Island Hastings Holdrege Kearney Lincoln McCook<\/p>\n<p>Nebraska City Norfolk North Platte Sidney Omaha O&#8217;Neill <\/p>\n<p>Scottsbluff S. Sioux City Valentine York <\/p>\n<p>Organ donors and recipients, and their families from each<\/p>\n<p>community and the surrounding area will be invited to attend.<\/p>\n<p>They may participate in the ceremony by giving a personal<\/p>\n<p>testimonial, reading an original poem or singing a song. These<\/p>\n<p>ceremonies will highlight the importance of organ donation. City<\/p>\n<p>officials will be asked to participate.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The decision for organ and tissue donation comes at a<\/p>\n<p>time when a family begins to realize their lives will continue<\/p>\n<p>without someone they love,&quot; said Kolleen Thompson, organ<\/p>\n<p>procurement coordinator for the Nebraska Health System and one of<\/p>\n<p>the coordinators of the campaign. &quot;It takes true courage and<\/p>\n<p>compassion to donate your loved one&#8217;s organs. The new life<\/p>\n<p>that results for the organ recipient is something that will never<\/p>\n<p>be forgotten.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>In conjunction with each tree-planting event, an educational<\/p>\n<p>presentation to local organizations, schools or clubs will be<\/p>\n<p>held. In addition, a permanent plaque will be planted at the base<\/p>\n<p>of the tree commemorating the event, said Kevin Warneke,<\/p>\n<p>associate director of UNMC&#8217;s Public Affairs Department and<\/p>\n<p>the other coordinator of the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign will help UNMC and NHS create awareness of The<\/p>\n<p>Lied Transplant Center, which is scheduled to open at the end of<\/p>\n<p>this year on the UNMC\/NHS campus. The 14-level building will<\/p>\n<p>feature 44 patient care suites as well as considerable space<\/p>\n<p>devoted to transplant research. Patients staying at the center<\/p>\n<p>will be part of an inovative cooperative care delivery system in<\/p>\n<p>which family or friends serve as care partners for the basic care<\/p>\n<p>needs of patients receiving solid organ or bone marrow<\/p>\n<p>transplants.<\/p>\n<p>Despite UNMC\/NHS&#8217;s stature as a leading transplant<\/p>\n<p>center, Nebraska only ranks No. 24 among all states in producing<\/p>\n<p>donors based on population, said Byers W. Shaw, Jr., M.D.,<\/p>\n<p>professor and chairman of the UNMC Department of Surgery and an<\/p>\n<p>organ transplant surgeon.<\/p>\n<p>All the trees for the &quot;Tree of Life&quot; campaign will<\/p>\n<p>be donated by Earl May Nursery and Garden Centers. In addition,<\/p>\n<p>local Earl May representatives will donate their services to<\/p>\n<p>plant the trees in many of the 22 communities.<\/p>\n<p>UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the<\/p>\n<p>state. Through its commitment to research, education and patient<\/p>\n<p>care, UNMC has established itself as one of the country&#8217;s leading<\/p>\n<p>centers for cancer research and treatment and solid organ<\/p>\n<p>transplantation. Nearly $25 million in research grants and<\/p>\n<p>contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually. In addition,<\/p>\n<p>UNMC&#8217;s educational programs are responsible for training more<\/p>\n<p>health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other<\/p>\n<p>institution. <\/p>\n<p>NHS is the partnership of Clarkson Hospital, the oldest<\/p>\n<p>hospital in Nebraska, and University Hospital, the primary<\/p>\n<p>teaching facility for UNMC. NHS operates 29 clinics and health<\/p>\n<p>care centers serving Omaha, Plattsmouth, Gretna and Auburn in<\/p>\n<p>Nebraska; Council Bluffs and Shenandoah in Iowa. In addition, NHS<\/p>\n<p>operates more than 350 outpatient clinics in 50 communities in<\/p>\n<p>four states.
