Williams, retired chairman and chief executive<br \/>\nofficer of Warner-Lambert Co. &#8211; &#8211; one of the world&#8217;s largest<br \/>\npharmaceutical companies, has made a gift of stock valued at<br \/>\n$100,000 to the University of Nebraska Foundation to benefit his<br \/>\nalma mater. The gift establishes the Joseph D. Williams Pharmacy<br \/>\nScholarship\/Leadership Award and provides scholarship assistance<br \/>\nto University of Nebraska Medical Center students in the College<br \/>\nof Pharmacy. <\/p>\n<p>In making his gift, Williams explained his motivation for<br \/>\nrecognizing outstanding pharmacy students. &quot;I am very<br \/>\npleased to be able to set up a scholarship\/leadership award that<br \/>\nrecognizes both scholarly achievement as well as significant<br \/>\ncommunity and professional pharmacy activities,&quot; said<br \/>\nWilliams, a 1950 graduate of the UNMC College of Pharmacy. <\/p>\n<p>The annual scholarship will be awarded to third or fourth year<br \/>\npharmacy students who have excelled academically and are actively<br \/>\ninvolved in organizations in the community as well as the<br \/>\npharmacy profession. <\/p>\n<p>Establishment of the endowed scholarship fund also supports<br \/>\nCampaign Nebraska, the University of Nebraska Foundation&#8217;s $375<br \/>\nmillion major gifts campaign. His gift addresses a key campaign<br \/>\nobjective to raise $3 million in scholarships and stipends for<br \/>\nprofessional and graduate students at the University of Nebraska<br \/>\nMedical Center. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;Mr. Williams is a legend in the pharmaceutical industry<br \/>\nand is widely known throughout the pharmacy profession,&quot;<br \/>\nsaid Clarence T. Ueda, Pharm.D., Ph.D., dean, UNMC College of<br \/>\nPharmacy. &quot;To have his name associated with the College of<br \/>\nPharmacy brings instant recognition to the College and to the<br \/>\nquality of its pharmacy program. It&#8217;s like a &#8216;good seal of<br \/>\napproval.&#8217;&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Williams&#8217; recent gift further illustrates his commitment to<br \/>\nthe University of Nebraska and the College of Pharmacy. Last<br \/>\nyear, Williams completed a $50,000 pledge to the college that<br \/>\ngenerated an additional $215,000 in matching gifts from various<br \/>\ncompanies. Also through Williams, Warner-Lambert made a $500,000<br \/>\ngift to establish an endowed chair, the Parke-Davis Chair in<br \/>\nPharmaceutics, benefiting the College of Pharmacy. In 1994, the<br \/>\nCollege of Pharmacy named its auditorium in Williams&#8217; honor to<br \/>\nrecognize the significant contributions he made to the pharmacy<br \/>\nprofession throughout his career.<\/p>\n<p>A native of Washington, Pa., Williams&#8217; interest in pharmacy<br \/>\ndeveloped in Nebraska where he grew up working in his<br \/>\ngrandfather&#8217;s Pawnee City drug store. After earning a pharmacy<br \/>\ndegree from the University of Nebraska, Williams joined<br \/>\nParke-Davis in 1950 as a medical service representative and, by<br \/>\n1968, had become director of U.S. marketing. Following the<br \/>\ncompany&#8217;s merger with Warner-Lambert in 1970, Williams held<br \/>\nseveral key positions before being elected president and chief<br \/>\noperating officer in 1980 and chairman and chief executive<br \/>\nofficer in 1984. <\/p>\n<p>Throughout his distinguished career, Williams was recognized<br \/>\nfor his support of the pharmacy profession. The American<br \/>\nPharmaceutical Association presented him its two highest and most<br \/>\nprestigious awards &#8211; &#8211; the Remington Honor Medal in 1980 and the<br \/>\nHugo H. Schaefer Award in 1987. He also was awarded 13 honorary<br \/>\ndoctorate degrees including a Doctor of Science Degree from the<br \/>\nUniversity of Nebraska Medical Center and a Doctor of Pharmacy<br \/>\nDegree from the UNMC College of Pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p>UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the<br \/>\nstate. Through its commitment to research, education and patient<br \/>\ncare, UNMC has established itself as one of the country&#8217;s leading<br \/>\ncenters for cancer research and treatment and solid organ<br \/>\ntransplantation. Nearly $25 million in research grants and<br \/>\ncontracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually.
