{"id":47866,"date":"2003-01-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2003-01-09T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2003\/01\/09\/undergraduate-students-take-part-in-rhen-winter-workshop\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T10:46:09","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T15:46:09","slug":"undergraduate-students-take-part-in-rhen-winter-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2003\/01\/09\/undergraduate-students-take-part-in-rhen-winter-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Undergraduate students take part in RHEN Winter Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>Eighteen undergraduate students who plan to pursue health-care professions<\/p>\n<p>are at the University of Nebraska Medical Center this week, Jan. 5-10,<\/p>\n<p>to learn more about health issues relevant to rural communities.<\/p>\n<p>The 2003 Winter Workshop, sponsored by the UNMC Rural Health Education<\/p>\n<p>Network, helps the undergraduate students learn more about the issues they<\/p>\n<p>will face as practitioners in rural Nebraska. The workshop attendees are<\/p>\n<p>students at Chadron State College, Hastings College, Midland Lutheran College,<\/p>\n<p>the University of Nebraska at Kearney and Wayne State College. All of the<\/p>\n<p>students have expressed a desire to practice in rural communities, either<\/p>\n<p>as a physician or a physician assistant.<\/p>\n<p>The students who are attending are upbeat and enthusiastic about the<\/p>\n<p>topics that theyre studying this week, said Dan Chambers, RHEN program<\/p>\n<p>coordinator. Most of them are from rural settings, so theyre keenly aware<\/p>\n<p>of many of the challenges that face rural providers, and theyre excited<\/p>\n<p>about learning more about rural health care.<\/p>\n<p>Chambers said that staff from the RHEN office and Susanna Von Essen,<\/p>\n<p>M.D., professor of pulmonary medicine at UNMC, developed the weeks curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>During the weeklong workshop, the students are listening to professors<\/p>\n<p>and state agency representatives who work with rural health and safety<\/p>\n<p>issues. The also are visiting rural community health-care facilities.
