As 27 students listened closely, Gary Sickmann, Cass County farmer and<\/p>\n

sales representative, calmly ticked off a series of personal farm accidents<\/p>\n

— any one of which has proved fatal to other people.  At age 10,<\/p>\n

he rolled a tractor into a ditch while helping his dad.  When he was<\/p>\n

21, his arm caught in the beater of a silage wagon, and at 35, a huge round<\/p>\n

bail of hay fell off a tractor on top of him.<\/p>\n

Sickmanns message to the group of Winter 2000 workshop students being<\/p>\n

hosted by the University of Nebraska Medical Center was simple.  At<\/p>\n

any given moment in rural life, there is a need for highly trained medical<\/p>\n

providers.  It is this ever growing need for rural health professionals<\/p>\n

that drives the vision of UNMC and Rural Health Education Network to continually<\/p>\n

encourage rural Nebraskans to enter the medical fields and to return to<\/p>\n

serve their local communities.<\/p>\n

The 8th annual workshop focused on farm safety. The pre-med students<\/p>\n

came from several state institutions including Wayne State College, Hastings<\/p>\n

College, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Nebraska Wesleyan University,<\/p>\n

University of Nebraska at Kearney and Creighton University.  They<\/p>\n

learned about the relative skills that can help them in their future endeavors<\/p>\n

as rural health-care practitioners. All the participants have expressed<\/p>\n

a desire to return to a rural setting to practice their professions.<\/p>\n

Most rural Nebraska students grow up hearing about or even knowing<\/p>\n

people who have experienced farm accidents, said Roxanna Jokela, RHEN<\/p>\n

coordinator. Gary Sickmann personalized issues that have been documented<\/p>\n

in numerous research studies.  We wanted to inform the students of<\/p>\n

the causes and effects of farm safety.<\/p>\n

Gary wanted to impress upon the students the added value and impact<\/p>\n

they can have on local health care when they return home as medical professionals.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public, academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education, outreach and patient care,<\/p>\n

UNMC has established itself as one of the country’s leading centers for<\/p>\n

cancer research and treatment and solid organ transplantation. Nearly $32<\/p>\n

million in research grants and contracts were awarded to UNMC scientists<\/p>\n

during the past fiscal year. In addition, UNMCs educational programs are<\/p>\n

responsible for training more health professionals practicing in Nebraska<\/p>\n

than any other institution.<\/p>\n
