Organizations and individuals are being asked to consider nominating<\/p>\n

Omaha area women of color for awards that will recognize outstanding contributions<\/p>\n

in four categories: business\/entrepreneur, education, professional volunteer,<\/p>\n

and youth. Nomination forms are due by Feb. 27.<\/p>\n

Award recipients will be honored at the first University of Nebraska<\/p>\n

at Omaha Women of Color Awards Luncheon 2003, which will be held in March.<\/p>\n

The event is sponsored by UNO, ConAgra Foods, Inc., and State Farm Insurance.<\/p>\n

Guest speaker will be Joyce Roché, president and chief executive<\/p>\n

officer of Girls Incorporated in New York. Girls Incorporated is a national<\/p>\n

research, education, and direct advocacy organization that encourages girls<\/p>\n

ages six to 18 to take risks and master physical, intellectual, and emotional<\/p>\n

challenges.<\/p>\n

We are proud to provide an opportunity to recognize achievements of<\/p>\n

women of color for the selfless contributions they make as leaders, role<\/p>\n

models, mentors and engaged leaders in the community, said Mary Mudd,<\/p>\n

Ed.D., vice-chancellor of student affairs, University of Nebraska at Omaha<\/p>\n

(UNO). It is important that the diverse perspectives, insights and solutions<\/p>\n

of these outstanding women be highlighted and celebrated in an effort to<\/p>\n

encourage continued and future involvement of women of color.<\/p>\n

Award recipients will be invited to participate in community speaking<\/p>\n

events, and to serve as role models and mentors for various university-related<\/p>\n

programs and activities.<\/p>\n

University of Nebraska President L. Dennis Smith, Ph.D., charged the<\/p>\n

committee to acknowledge outstanding contributions and leadership made<\/p>\n

by women of color in the Omaha area. The luncheon event is scheduled for<\/p>\n

Thursday, March 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the UNO Milo Bail Student<\/p>\n

Center. Anyone is invited to attend. Cost is $25 a person. Organizations<\/p>\n

can reserve tables of eight.<\/p>\n
