 The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) has been awarded<\/p>\n

Rowen K. Zetterman, M.D., the 1998 Samuel Weiss Award, which is given annually<\/p>\n

to an individual who has made generous contributions of time, effort and<\/p>\n

creativity to the ACG.<\/p>\n

Dr. Zetterman is professor, vice chairman and director of clinical operation<\/p>\n

of the department of internal medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical<\/p>\n

Center. He served on the ACG board of governors from 1990 to 1992 and the<\/p>\n

board of trustees in 1991 and 1992. As editor of the American Journal of<\/p>\n

Gastroenterology from 1991 to 1997, Dr. Zettermans guidance helped the<\/p>\n

journal grow from 1,900 to 2,700 pages published annually.<\/p>\n

Dr. Zetterman received his bachelors degree from Nebraska Wesleyan<\/p>\n

University in 1966 and his medical degree from UNMC in 1969. He has served<\/p>\n

on the UNMC faculty since 1976.<\/p>\n

 The ACG was founded in 1932 to advance the study and medical treatment<\/p>\n

of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. The College promotes the highest<\/p>\n

standards in medical education and is guided by its commitment to meeting<\/p>\n

the needs of clinical gastroenterology practitioners. The Samuel Weiss<\/p>\n

Award was established in commemoration of the ACGs founding father.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education and patient care, UNMC has<\/p>\n

established itself as one of the country’s leading centers for cancer research<\/p>\n

and treatment and solid organ transplantation. More than $34 million in<\/p>\n

research grants and contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually.<\/p>\n

In addition, UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for training more<\/p>\n

health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other institution.<\/p>\n
