Zetterman Elected President of the American College<\/p>\n

of Gastroenterology<\/p>\n

Rowen K. Zetterman, M.D., vice chairman and director of clinical operations<\/p>\n

of the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s department of internal medicine,<\/p>\n

has been elected the 2000-2001 president of the American College of Gastroenterology,<\/p>\n

a national specialty association representing nearly 7,500 clinical gastroenterologists<\/p>\n

and other specialists in digestive diseases.<\/p>\n

Dr. Zetterman officially assumed his post as president Oct. 16 during<\/p>\n

the College’s Annual Scientific Meeting in New York.<\/p>\n

As president, Dr. Zetterman will direct programs which include continuing<\/p>\n

medical education in the clinical, scientific and patient-related skills<\/p>\n

of gastroenterology, policies involving national and state medical affairs,<\/p>\n

managed care issues and clinical investigation.<\/p>\n

Dr. Zetterman, a UNMC professor of medicine, also serves as chief of<\/p>\n

the medicine department at the Omaha Veterans Affairs Medical Center and<\/p>\n

clinical professor at Creighton University School of Medicine.<\/p>\n

Dr. Zetterman earned his undergraduate degree from Nebraska Wesleyan<\/p>\n

University in 1966. He graduated in 1969 from UNMC, where he completed<\/p>\n

his internship, residency and gastroenterology fellowship. He also completed<\/p>\n

a fellowship in hepatology and nutrition at New Jersey College of Medicine<\/p>\n

at Newark. Prior to joining the UNMC faculty, he spent two years with the<\/p>\n

Gastroenterology Service of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.<\/p>\n

He has served as a member of the ACG’s board of governors, board of<\/p>\n

trustees and editor of “The American Journal of Gastroenterology.” During<\/p>\n

his six-year term as editor, the journal grew from 1,900 to 2,700 pages<\/p>\n

published annually and increased in acceptance and quality. In 1997, he<\/p>\n

was awarded the William D. Carey Award by the ACG board of governors. The<\/p>\n

following year, he received the Samuel S. Weiss Award in recognition of<\/p>\n

his outstanding career service to the ACG.<\/p>\n
