The five-year grant was awarded by<br \/>\nthe National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, which is part of the National<br \/>\nInstitutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The program&#8217;s goals are to provide students interested in a career in<br \/>\ncardiovascular research a quality education in cardiovascular function<br \/>\nand disease in a basic science laboratory setting. It also would expose<br \/>\nstudents and fellows to faculty from different specialty areas. Funding<br \/>\nreceived in the first year will be $31,788; the second year, $65,832; and<br \/>\nthe third, fourth and fifth year, $95,364.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&quot;In spite of significant advances in prevention and treatment,<br \/>\ndeath and disability from cardiovascular disease remains the number one<br \/>\nhealth concern,&quot; said Irving Zucker, Ph.D., principal investigator<br \/>\nof the grant and chairman and professor of the UNMC physiology and biophysics<br \/>\ndepartment. &quot;This grant will give students the opportunity to work<br \/>\nwith talented faculty to study cellular, molecular and organ-based abnormalities<br \/>\nof the heart. If we understand these mechanisms through basic science,<br \/>\nwe can develop more and better ways to treat diseases of the heart.&quot;<br \/>\n<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Dr. Zucker said this is one of two training grants at UNMC. Unlike typical<br \/>\nresearch grants that pay for salaries, supplies, equipment, travel, budget<br \/>\nand other incidentals, training grants are used only for paying a trainees&#8217;<br \/>\nsalary. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&quot;What getting this grant means to UNMC is that the National Institutes<br \/>\nof Health recognizes UNMC has a significant number of mentors available<br \/>\nthat are productive and can provide resources for training these young<br \/>\nscientists,&quot; said Dr. Zucker. &quot;Although the trainees will move<br \/>\non after their training, we are making a long-term investment in individuals<br \/>\nwho will become national resources.&quot;<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Pre-doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows interested in cardiovascular<br \/>\nresearch will be selected from a pool of national applicants. Under the<br \/>\ngrant, they will spend about two years in the UNMC Cardiovascular Research<br \/>\nCenter working with UNMC faculty researchers and physicians studying cardiovascular<br \/>\nfunction and disease.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&quot;While cardiovascular research exists in various UNMC departments,<br \/>\nthis training grant, along with the newly-established Cardiovascular Research<br \/>\nCenter, are the first attempts to bring together faculty from various disciplines<br \/>\nto offer a comprehensive training program dealing with the latest developments<br \/>\nin cardiovascular science,&quot; said Dr. Zucker.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The UNMC departments that will support the training program include<br \/>\nphysiology and biophysics, surgery, pharmacology, pathology and microbiology,<br \/>\npediatrics, anesthesiology, cell biology and anatomy and the College of<br \/>\nMedicine. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular diseases<br \/>\nclaimed nearly 960,600 lives in 1995, accounting for 41.5 percent of all<br \/>\ndeaths. About one-sixth of all people who die from cardiovascular disease<br \/>\nare under age 65. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Coronary heart disease, caused by atherosclerotic narrowing of the coronary<br \/>\narteries, is likely to produce angina, heart attack or both. It is the<br \/>\nsingle leading cause of death in America today.
