The University of Nebraska Medical Center Student Association for Rural Health, made up of students from rural areas studying at UNMC, held its eleventh Career Day September 18. The event is co-sponsored by the Rural Health Education Network and the Nebraska Area Health Education Center program.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
The event introduced 215 high school students to the multitude of careers available in the health sciences. <\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Students from 47 Nebraska schools learned about opportunities in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, physician assistant, physical therapy, clinical laboratory science, public health, radiation sciences, and other fields. They attended three tailored 25-minute interactive sessions of their choosing with various health professionals.  <\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
The SARH Career Day is one of many UNMC efforts to assist in “Growing Our Own” future health professionals for Nebraska.  <\/div>\n

UNMC is the only public health science center in the state. Its educational programs are responsible for training more health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other institution. Through their commitment to education, research, patient care and outreach, UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, have established themselves as one of the country’s leading centers in cancer, transplantation biology, bioterrorism preparedness, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, genetics, biomedical technology and ophthalmology. UNMC’s research funding from external sources now exceeds $80 million annually and has resulted in the creation of more than 2,400 highly skilled jobs in the state. UNMC’s physician practice group, UNMC Physicians, includes 513 physicians in 50 specialties and subspecialties who practice primarily in The Nebraska Medical Center.
