The appointment was announced today by the department&#8217;s chairman Robert Muelleman, M.D.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Dr. Wadman, an associate professor of emergency medicine, assumed his new role earlier this summer and now oversees educational activities for students and residents in the department, Dr. Muelleman said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">About 50 students, 50 off-service residents and 19 full-time emergency residents currently study in the department.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&quot;Mike is smart, organized and a great clinician,&quot; Dr. Muelleman said. &quot;He&#8217;s good role model for our students and residents to emulate.&quot;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Dr. Wadman was the director of student education for the emergency medicine section for many years before the emergency medicine residency began in 2003.&nbsp;He has been director of the residency program since the its inception.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&quot;He basically started the residency program,&quot; Dr. Muelleman said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Dr. Wadman also has been responsible for innovative advances in emergency medicine education including the introduction of lightly-embalmed cadavers and patient simulators to assess the competency of residents, Dr. Muelleman said, noting that Dr. Wadman also is well published in the area of student and resident education.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&quot;Mike&#8217;s really been a leader in developing effective ways of educating our students and residents,&quot; Dr. Muelleman said. &quot;His involvement in such activities made him a natural choice to head the department&#8217;s educational efforts.&quot;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;text-indent: 0in\"><em><font size=\"2\">UNMC is the only public health science center in the state. Its educational programs are responsible for training more health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other institution. Through their commitment to education, research, patient care and outreach, UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, have established themselves as one of the country&#8217;s leading centers in cancer, transplantation biology, bioterrorism preparedness, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, genetics, biomedical technology and ophthalmology. UNMC&rsquo;s research funding from external sources now exceeds $82 million annually and has resulted in the creation of more than 2,400 highly skilled jobs in the state.
