{"id":48738,"date":"2009-06-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-12T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2009\/06\/12\/10-students-come-to-unmc-for-holdrege-summer-honors-program\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:24:08","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:24:08","slug":"10-students-come-to-unmc-for-holdrege-summer-honors-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2009\/06\/12\/10-students-come-to-unmc-for-holdrege-summer-honors-program\/","title":{"rendered":"10 students come to UNMC for Holdrege Summer Honors Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>Ten honor students participated in the Holdrege Summer Honors Program this month at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The goal of the workshop is to encourage high school students to pursue careers in the health sciences with the hope that they may someday practice health care in rural Nebraska where critical shortages of health care professionals remains a major concern.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The students learned about UNMC&rsquo;s academic programs, attended lectures, and did research in their area of interest. At the end of the workshop, students researched and developed papers about their findings.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&ldquo;We always enjoy hosting this program for our Holdrege Summer Honors students,&rdquo; said Lisa Jewell, director of the UNMC Youth Learning Center. &ldquo;I try to schedule presentations and topics they may not have available to them in their rural communities.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">After attending the presentation at UNMC, the students go back to their hometowns and job shadow health care professionals in their communities.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">One of the projects the students worked on was concocting their own &ldquo;compounds&rdquo;
