The president has called on Congress to have a bill ready by August.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Experts say change is necessary and will have a vast impact.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The University of Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC Physicians and The Nebraska Medical Center have formed a 14-member health care review group to study the issues that will affect the medical center and its employees.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The group can be an objective resource for elected officials, business and community entities in Nebraska in communicating the potential impact of health care reform proposals, said Bob Bartee, vice chancellor of external affairs at UNMC.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The group is preparing a series of white papers about key areas in health care reform, Bartee said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&quot;Everyone has an interest in what happens, and we are taking a comprehensive look at various issues in health care reform,&quot; Bartee said. &quot;We&#8217;re watching all the issues and will do our best to interpret their impact on people and try to answer the questions that people will be asking.&quot;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Some of the issues of health care reform include:<\/div>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in\" type=\"disc\">\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">How to pay for a public plan;<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Access to health care for the current 47 million uninsured;<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement;<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Graduate medical education pay for residents; and<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Quality and safety issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Members of the medical center health care review group are:<\/div>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in\" type=\"disc\">\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><b>John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D.,<\/b> dean of the College of Medicine;<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><b>Bob Bartee,<\/b> vice chancellor of external affairs<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><b>Bob Bell,<\/b> vice president for business and community development, UNeMed<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><b>Gerald Moore, M.D.,<\/b> professor of rheumatology, and senior associate dean for academic affairs<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><b>James Gigantelli, M.D.,<\/b> professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences, assistant dean of government relations<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><b>John Benson, M.D.,<\/b> professor of internal medicine<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><b>Keith Mueller, Ph.D.,<\/b> interim dean of the College of Public Health and health policy expert<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><b>Michael Sitorius, M.D.,<\/b> chairman of the Department of Family Medicine<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><b>Robert Wigton, M.D.,<\/b> associate dean for graduate medical education<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><b>Thomas Tape, M.D.,<\/b> section chief, Department of Internal Medicine<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><b>Mark Bowen,<\/b> director of government relations<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><b>Cory Shaw,<\/b> CEO, UNMC Physicians<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><b>Bill Dinsmoor,<\/b> chief financial officer at The Nebraska Medical Center; and<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><b>Harris Frankel, M.D.,<\/b> a private practice neurologist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<em><font size=\"2\">UNMC is the only public health science center in the state. Its educational programs are responsible for training more health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other institution. Through their commitment to education, research, patient care and outreach, UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, have established themselves as one of the country&#8217;s leading centers in cancer, transplantation biology, bioterrorism preparedness, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, genetics, biomedical technology and ophthalmology. UNMC&rsquo;s research funding from external sources now exceeds $82 million annually and has resulted in the creation of more than 2,600 highly skilled jobs in the state.
