{"id":49001,"date":"2010-06-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-02T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2010\/06\/02\/big-splash-returns-on-august-21\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:20:22","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:20:22","slug":"big-splash-returns-on-august-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2010\/06\/02\/big-splash-returns-on-august-21\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Splash returns on August 21"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><b><i>All-inclusive swimming event raises money for children and adults with disabilities<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The event that raised more than $30,000 for children and adults with disabilities in 2009 is back and wetter than ever.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The <a target=\"_blanK\" href=\"http:\/\/mmibigsplash.org\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Big Splash<\/a> is a recreational and competitive swimming fundraiser that brings together swimmers of all abilities and ages to support the Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. MMI provides care care and service&nbsp;for individuals across the state with diverse disabilities.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">This year&#8217;s event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 21.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">A variety of races and relays for recreational, competitive, adaptive and assisted swimmers of all ages will be held at the Westside High School Pool (8701 Pacific St.) from 8 a.m. to noon. <a target=\"_blanK\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sportssignup.com\/Munroe-Meyer-Big-Splash-Online-Registration.start\" rel=\"noopener\">Registration<\/a> is available now.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in;text-indent: -0.5in;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span>The cost is $25 per participant and covers any combination of events and entrance to the Family Swim &amp; Splash Party to be held at the Rockbrook Swimming Pool (10800 W. Center Rd.) from 1 to 3 p.m.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;text-indent: 0in;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span>All swimmers will receive a Big Splash T-shirt and swim cap for participation.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\">Scholarships are available for adaptive and assisted swimmers. To apply, contact a Big Splash representative at (402) 502-0300.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\">Olympic Gold Medalist swimmer <a target=\"_blanK\" href=\"http:\/\/mmibigsplash.org\/olympic_guest.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Misty Hyman<\/a> will be the guest of honor this year. Hyman was diagnosed with asthma in 1984. Today, she helps people recognize their potential and chase their dreams as a motivational speaker and swim coach.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\">&quot;MMI is all about children with disabilities being a part of the community and helping them to achieve everything they can achieve,&quot; said Mike Leibowitz, Ph.D., director of MMI. &quot;The Big Splash makes those ideals a reality.&quot;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><i><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><font color=\"#211d1e\">As the state&rsquo;s only academic health science center, UNMC is on the leading edge of health care.
