The bugs that were visible in the pond water were nothing compared to what Amber Stice could see through the microscope. <\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/p>\n

“There’s a whole world in there,” Stice said.<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/p>\n

Poppe was one of 21 high school juniors and seniors who spent Aug. 3-6 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center participating in the annual Summer Health Professions Workshop hosted by the UNMC Youth Learning Center.<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/p>\n

Along with time spent in the lab, the students also learned how to suture using bananas, about forensic medicine and the wide variety of health careers taught at UNMC.<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/p>\n

“We like to expose the students to areas of health care that they may not encounter in their hometown,” said Lisa Jewell, director of the Youth Learning Center. “We always enjoy having the students on campus. They are the best and brightest from their communities.”<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/p>\n

The students are chosen to participate through an application process, Jewell said.<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/p>\n
