<\/font><\/font>The topic of the second annual Science on Tap event at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 4, will be medical humanities. The event, which will be held at KANEKO, 1111 Jones St., is sponsored by UNeMed, the technology transfer office for the University of Nebraska Medical Center.<\/font><\/font>
\n<\/font>
\nScottish artist Mark Gilbert, UNMC faculty members Virginia Aita, Ph.D., and William Lydiatt, M.D., along with Hesse McGraw and Mark Masuoka, from the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, will discuss the "Portraits of Care" project at UNMC.<\/font><\/font>
\n<\/font>
\n"Portraits of Care" is a unique art exhibit capturing the emotions of patients and caregivers at UNMC while involving research on the powerful connection between art and medicine.<\/font><\/font>
\n<\/font>
\nThrough creating portraits of caregivers and patients, the works emphasize the identity transformation of subjects, the centrality of the idea of mortality, the presence of hope despite adversity, and the importance of empathy and compassion in care. <\/font><\/font>
\n<\/font>
\nThe results of the work were recently published in the Journal of Medical Humanities. <\/font><\/font>
\n<\/font>
\nThe original "Portraits of Care" Exhibit are currently housed at the Bemis Center in Omaha. Slides showing the portraits will be on display during the event.<\/font><\/font>
\n<\/font>
