As part of their course on medical decision making students in the University of Nebraska Medical Center High School Alliance toured two operating rooms and the emergency room at The Nebraska Medical Center recently.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

The students donned surgical scrubs and masks, learned what it’s like to scrub in on a surgery, observed the variety of tools that are used during a hip replacement, and heard about the proper safety protocols doctors and nurses must follow to ensure a patient’s safety.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

While in the ER, the students saw the latest technology used for trauma victims and stepped inside an ambulance. An emergency room nurse took the students step by step through the process of how patients are triaged and treated as they come in whether by ambulance or on their own.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

The High School Alliance is a partnership between UNMC, eight metropolitan area school districts and an educational service unit. There are 36 students from 17 different high schools. The goal of the alliance is to give high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to take college-level courses in preparation for careers in health care.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n
