{"id":49127,"date":"2011-02-07T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-02-07T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/02\/07\/feb-16-omaha-science-caf%c3%a9-do-sex-drugs-rock-and-roll-contribute-to-head-neck-cancer\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:17:28","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:17:28","slug":"feb-16-omaha-science-caf%c3%a9-do-sex-drugs-rock-and-roll-contribute-to-head-neck-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/02\/07\/feb-16-omaha-science-caf%c3%a9-do-sex-drugs-rock-and-roll-contribute-to-head-neck-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"Feb 16 Omaha Science Caf\u00e9: \u2018Do Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll Contribute to Head, Neck Cancer?\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><span style=\"color: black\">The emerging epidemic of head and neck cancer will be the topic of the next <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/sciencecafe\/\"><span style=\"color: purple\">Science Cafe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: black\"> in Omaha on Wednesday, Feb. 16, from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14<sup>th<\/sup> St. The speaker will be <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/ent\/index.cfm?conref=41\">William Lydiatt, M.D.,<\/a><span style=\"color: black\"> whose talk will be titled, &ldquo;Do Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll Contribute to Head and Neck Cancer?&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"color: black\">The event is free and open to the public.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: 12pt\"><span style=\"color: black\"><br \/>\nAs a professor <\/span>in the University of Nebraska Medical Center Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Lydiatt specializes&nbsp;in head and neck cancer.&nbsp;He also is vice chair of the department and serves as a faculty member at the Omaha VA Medical Center.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"color: black\">His talk will cover how <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/hpv\/stdfact-hpv.htm\"><span style=\"color: purple\">human papillomavirus (HPV)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: black\"> is contributing to the increase of head and neck cancer. He also will detail vaccine prevention, treatment options including radiation, chemotherapy and surgical therapy and the role of sexual transmission. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Head and neck cancers account for about 3 to 5 percent of all cancers in the United States and are more common in men and in people over age 50.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: 12pt\">Dr. Lydiatt received his training at UNMC then completed a fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. His primary research interest is prevention&nbsp;and treatment of depression in head &amp; neck&nbsp;cancer. He has authored and co-authored more than 30 book chapters and original manuscripts.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: 12pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"color: black\">Science Cafe is a free educational event sponsored by UNMC and other groups to increase the population&rsquo;s science literacy. Hosted by UNMC, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bionebraska.com\/\">Bio Nebraska<\/a><span style=\"color: black\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nebraskacures.com\/\">Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures<\/a><span style=\"color: black\">, Science Cafes are held the first Tuesday of each month in Omaha and one Thursday every other month in Lincoln.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"color: black\">A more scientifically literate populace is a goal in UNMC&rsquo;s strategic plan.
