{"id":49138,"date":"2011-02-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-02-09T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/02\/09\/dr-nickol-named-assistant-dean-for-interprofessional-education-at-unmc\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:17:25","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:17:25","slug":"dr-nickol-named-assistant-dean-for-interprofessional-education-at-unmc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/02\/09\/dr-nickol-named-assistant-dean-for-interprofessional-education-at-unmc\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Nickol named assistant dean for interprofessional education at UNMC"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><b><i>Newly created position should ultimately lead to better patient care, reduced costs<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/intmed\/gim\/bio.cfm?MyID=132&amp;section=General%20Medicine-Academic\">Devin Nickol, M.D.,<\/a> an assistant professor of internal medicine, has been named assistant dean for interprofessional education for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/academicaffairs\/\">University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The newly created position allows UNMC to better organize all of its interprofessional education (IPE) activities.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Dr. Nickol said the office has two initial goals:<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;text-indent: 0in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span>Create an office of education to oversee, coordinate and centralize IPE activities; and<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;text-indent: 0in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span>Conduct research on the benefits of IPE educational activities.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&ldquo;We know students who participate in IPE activities view them as valuable learning experiences,&rdquo; Dr. Nickol said. &ldquo;However, we want to identify the areas where IPE can best support core graduate programs across multiple disciplines.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">IPE is an important aspect of professional education and UNMC students must learn to work as part of health care teams with students from other programs, said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/academicaffairs\/print\/pamies.htm\">Rubens Pamies, M.D<\/a>., UNMC vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&ldquo;This will not only prepare them for their careers but also provide the best patient care,&rdquo; Dr. Pamies said. &ldquo;In addition, the office will lead the effort to engage faculty and students in the research that will determine if team-based health care can improve quality outcomes for patients as well as reduce cost.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">UNMC students already work as teams in clinical settings and in service learning projects, Dr. Nickol said, noting that the next step is to examine other areas where students can benefit from a shared experience.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><i><span style=\"color: black;font-size: 10pt\">Through world-class research and patient care, UNMC generates breakthroughs that make life better for people throughout Nebraska and beyond.
