Iconic windmills raise money to fight cancer<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

WEST POINT, NE – The 2011 Cattlemen’s Ball<\/a> will feature a unique fundraising campaign that capitalizes on windmills and plows, two icons that have long been associated with Nebraska.<\/p>\n

The theme of this year’s ball is “Plowing Cancer Under” with the logo depicting a cowboy on horseback with a windmill in the background.  <\/p>\n

Supporters of the ball can purchase their own miniature windmill with proceeds going toward cancer research at the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center<\/a> in Omaha.  <\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
The windmills<\/a> are available in two sizes – 8 feet and 17 inches.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
The 8-foot model will have the logo on one side of the windmill’s vane. The other side will be blank to allow businesses or individuals to add their own message with a screen printed image – such as a company logo, a Husker theme, or a personal quote.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
For a $200 donation, which includes creation of the artwork, buyers can donate the windmill back to the silent auction that will be held at the Cattlemen’s Ball on June 3 and 4 at the Harry and Doris Knobbe<\/a> feedlot near West Point, Neb. For a $300 donation, buyers can purchase a windmill, decorate it as they wish and keep it for themselves.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
The 17-inch model has “2011 Cattlemen’s Ball” on one side of the windmill vane and “Plowing Cancer Under” on the other side. It is available for a $40 donation. <\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
“The different donation levels make it affordable for everyone,” said Paul Meyer, chairman of the windmill committee. “We think it will be a great way to raise money for cancer research while giving people a unique keepsake.”<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
The windmills can be ordered at www.cattlemensball.com<\/a> or by contacting Meyer at 402-640-5921.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
The Cattlemen’s Ball is the state’s premier fundraiser in the fight against cancer with 100 percent of the dollars raised staying in Nebraska. Country music star Sara Evans<\/a> is the featured performer at this year’s event. As always, it is an informal gathering and open to the public. <\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
Trail Boss tickets<\/a> can be purchased for $350. They include a social on Friday, June 3, a private champagne reception and brunch on Saturday, a commemorative gift, and preferred seating for the Saturday evening dinner and concert.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
A $75 Top Hand ticket<\/a> provides admission to the event beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday and includes a New York strip dinner, dance and concert.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
“A total of 4,000 tickets will be sold,” said Gary Kaup, co-chairman of the Cattlemen’s Ball. “More than half of the tickets have already been sold.”<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
The Cattlemen’s Ball showcases rural Nebraska and promotes beef as part of a healthy diet. It is hosted by a different Nebraska ranch or feedlot every year.<\/div>\n
 <\/div>\n
In addition to providing research funds for the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center, a portion of the funds is also targeted for local health care organizations. Since its inception, the Cattlemen’s Ball has raised more than $4.7 million.<\/div>\n
