Britigan, M.D.,<\/a> Taylor Professor and chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.med.uc.edu\/Home.aspx\">University of Cincinnati College of Medicine<\/a>, has been selected as the new dean for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/com\/\">U<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: black;font-weight: normal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/com\/\">niversity of Nebraska Medical Center<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/com\/\">College of Medicine<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"color: black\">The appointment, which is subject to approval of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nebraska.edu\/board.html\">University of Nebraska Board of Regents<\/a> at its March 11 meeting, was announced today by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/chancellor.htm\">UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D.<\/a> It is effective July 1.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&ldquo;Brad has an outstanding record of achievement and experience in education, patient care and funded thematic research,&rdquo; Dr. Maurer said. &ldquo;I would call him a triple threat. He&rsquo;s outstanding in each of those areas. People today are usually more targeted in one or two but not all three.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&ldquo;He was elected to one of the most prestigious societies in medicine, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-asci.org\/\">American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI).<\/a> Additionally, he has been a strong financial manager at the University of Cincinnati.&nbsp;I feel confident he will continue to move the college to the forefront as we strive to rank among the very best.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The ASCI is an honor society of nearly 3,000 of the nation&rsquo;s top physician-scientists who translate findings in the laboratory to the advancement of clinical practice.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Dr. Britigan has 24 years in academic medicine &ndash; 17 years at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicine.uiowa.edu\/CCOM\/index.html\">University of Iowa<\/a>, where he served as the director of the division of infectious diseases, and the past seven years at Cincinnati. He also has 23-year association with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.va.gov\/\">Department of Veterans Affairs<\/a> as a staff physician and researcher in Iowa City and Cincinnati.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">As chairman of <a href=\"http:\/\/intmed.uc.edu\/global_tpl2.cfm?SecId=DIVISIONSPECIALTIES&amp;SubId=nephrology&amp;PageId=Main\">internal medicine at Cincinnati<\/a>, Dr. Britigan oversees a $90 million budget and about 500 employees, including approximately 220 faculty and 175 resident physicians and fellows.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">His wife, <a href=\"http:\/\/etd.ohiolink.edu\/view.cgi?acc_num=ucin1258660537\">Denise Britigan, Ph.D.,<\/a> also will be joining the UNMC faculty as assistant professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/publichealth\/\">Department of Health Promotion, Social &amp; Behavioral Health of the College of Public Health<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&ldquo;We both are very excited, as we were very impressed with both UNMC and the metropolitan area during our visits to Omaha,&rdquo; Dr. Britigan said. &ldquo;My biggest goal will be to continue the tremendous growth and success at UNMC that has taken place under Dr. Maurer and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/alumni\/com_award_recipients.htm\">Deans (John) Gollan<\/a> and (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2010\/03\/09\/dr-markin-named-interim-college-of-medicine-dean\/\">Rod) Markin<\/a>, while at the same time addressing the fiscal challenges that all medical schools are currently facing.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">An infectious disease specialist, Dr. Britigan, a Minnesota native who grew up in St. Louis, earned his undergraduate degree from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cornell.edu\/\">Cornell University<\/a> and his medical degree from the <a href=\"http:\/\/keck.usc.edu\/\">University of Southern California<\/a>. He did internal medicine residency training at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeislandhospital.org\/rih\/\">Rhode Island Hospital in Providence<\/a> and his infectious disease fellowship at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/infdis\/\">University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">A prodigious investigator, Dr. Britigan&rsquo;s research focuses on bacterial infections of the lung. His research has been continuously funded during his academic career though numerous grants from the <a href=\"http:\/\/nih.gov\/\">National Institutes of Health<\/a>, the Veterans Administration, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cff.org\/\">Cystic Fibrosis Foundation<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/\">American Heart Association<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">In addition to his election to the ASCI, Dr. Britigan was elected into the <a href=\"http:\/\/aap-online.org\/\">Association of American Physicians (AAP),<\/a> a select group of nearly 2,000 members dedicated to the advancement of scientific and practical medicine.
