{"id":49145,"date":"2011-02-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-02-27T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/02\/27\/key-unmc-administrator-dr-rubens-pamies-dies-unexpectedly\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:17:17","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:17:17","slug":"key-unmc-administrator-dr-rubens-pamies-dies-unexpectedly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/02\/27\/key-unmc-administrator-dr-rubens-pamies-dies-unexpectedly\/","title":{"rendered":"Key UNMC administrator, Dr. Rubens Pamies, dies unexpectedly"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><b><i>Was crusader for helping people in need and reducing health disparities<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">A key <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/\">University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/a> administrator, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/academicaffairs\/pamies.htm\">Rubens Pamies, M.D.,<\/a> died Saturday morning at his sister&rsquo;s home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, of an apparent heart attack.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Dr. Pamies, 52, has served as UNMC&rsquo;s vice chancellor of academic affairs and dean for graduate studies for more than eight years.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">A native of Haiti, Dr. Pamies&rsquo; death was a shock to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/chancellor.htm\">UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D.,<\/a> and his wife, Beverly.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&ldquo;It is a real tragedy,&rdquo; Dr. Maurer said. &ldquo;He had so much more to contribute to&nbsp;health care and the greater community world.&nbsp;He was a champion for great causes. He became a close and loyal friend and confidant. Beverly and I will miss him very much. It is a great loss to UNMC and humanity.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">\n&ldquo;Rubens was a nationally renowned academic educator. He was an expert on health disparities. He was there to help rescue Haiti from the devastation of the 2010 earthquake. He led the volunteer effort for UNMC and subsequently published a gut-wrenching book (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/01\/12\/haiti-a-year-later-medical-center-response-featured-in-new-book\/\">Help and Hope for Haiti<\/a>) on this tragedy.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Dr. Maurer saluted Dr. Pamies for his work on numerous initiatives, including:<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;text-indent: -0.25in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\">&middot;<span style=\"font-size: 7pt\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Creating the first online pre-matriculation program for first-year medical students;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;text-indent: -0.25in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\">&middot;<span style=\"font-size: 7pt\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Founding the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/virginia\/\">Virginia-Nebraska Alliance<\/a> to attract minorities to health professions; and<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;text-indent: -0.25in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\">&middot;<span style=\"font-size: 7pt\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Promoting diversity and interprofessional education with the support of a grant from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rwjf.org\/\">Robert Wood Johnson Foundation<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Two of Dr. Pamies&rsquo; closest friends and mentors were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surgeongeneral.gov\/library\/youthviolence\/satcher.htm\">David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D.,<\/a> former U.S. Surgeon General, and <a href=\"http:\/\/pemsm.com\/about\/louissullivan\">Louis Sullivan, M.D.,<\/a> president emeritus of Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta and former secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Dr. Satcher combined with Dr. Pamies to co-author &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2005\/09\/22\/dr-pamies-co-authors-book-on-health-disparities\/\">Multicultural Medicine and Health Disparities<\/a>,&rdquo; the first book to take a comprehensive look at health care disparities.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Dr. Sullivan worked with Dr. Pamies on the Virginia-Nebraska Alliance, a unique program involving five Historically Black Colleges and Universities and a leading community college in Virginia along with UNMC and Virginia Commonwealth University. The alliance provides a multitude of academic and research opportunities for minority undergraduate students and faculty.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 10pt\">&ldquo;Rubens had a very strong commitment to addressing the health needs of the poor regardless of their race or ethnicity,&rdquo; Dr. Sullivan said. &ldquo;He worked tirelessly to accomplish that goal. He was a very strong person with a big heart full of compassion for others.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Dr. Maurer said, &ldquo;Rubens was a global player in education &ndash; in Washington, D.C., as a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbme.org\/\">National Board of Medical Examiners<\/a>, and in China, where he helped provide new educational exchanges for students and faculty.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">An ardent baseball fan and devoted Husker supporter, Dr. Pamies befriended many professional athletes over the years. One of his closest friends was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2007\/03\/15\/pro-baseballs-mesa-uses-his-foundation-to-save-dominican-child\/\">Jose Mesa<\/a>, a relief pitcher for nine different major league teams. In 2007, working with Mesa&rsquo;s foundation, Dr. Pamies was able to bring a five-year-old boy from the Dominican Republic to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrensomaha.org\/\">Children&rsquo;s Hospital &amp; Medical Center<\/a> to undergo a life-saving heart operation.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">Locally, Dr. Pamies worked closely with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buildingbrightfutures.net\/\">Building Bright Futures<\/a> to identify educational opportunities for low income children in Douglas and Sarpy County.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">\nIn 2007, he was honored by Omaha&rsquo;s new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhanet.org\/news\/index.htm?topic=details&amp;news_id=1022\">Gershom Empowerment Center<\/a> with its inaugural award for his lifetime commitment to medicine and reducing health disparities.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 10pt\">The son of Haitian immigrants, Dr. Pamies moved to Queens, N.Y., at the age of six. He earned his undergraduate degree from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stjohns.edu\/\">St. John&#8217;s University in New York<\/a> in 1981 and his medical degree from the <a href=\"http:\/\/medicine.buffalo.edu\/\">State University of New York at Buffalo, School of Medicine,<\/a> in 1986.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 10pt\">Dr. Pamies was involved in academic medicine for 22 years, working at the <a href=\"http:\/\/health.usf.edu\/medicine\/home.html\">University of South Florida College of Medicine<\/a> in Tampa from 1989 to 1992, at <a href=\"http:\/\/casemed.case.edu\/\">Case Western University School of Medicine <\/a>in Cleveland from 1992 to 2000, and at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mmc.edu\/\">Meharry Medical College<\/a> in Nashville from 2000 to 2002.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 10pt\">He is preceded in death by his parents, Georges and Liliane. Survivors include:&nbsp;his wife, Michelle Austin Pamies; sister, Linda Boucard (husband Bernard);&nbsp;and his five children, Ben (wife Amanda and their son Corben),&nbsp;Christina, Rachel, Robert and Michael.<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 10pt\">\n<div style=\"text-indent: -1in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 1in\"><span style=\"color: black\">A funeral mass will be held for Dr. Pamies at 9 a.m., March 12, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 631 Elmont Road, Elmont, N.Y. <\/span>Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on March 11 at Edward F. Lieber<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: -1in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 1in\">Funeral Homes, 266 N. Central Ave., Valley Stream, N.Y. Burial will be at Plain Lawn Cemetery, 279 W. Old Country Rd., Hicksville, N.Y.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: -1in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 1in\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: -1in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 1in\">A memorial service will be held in Omaha at 10 a.m. on March 14 at Witherspoon Hall in Joslyn Art Museum.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: -1in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 1in\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: -1in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 1in\">Memorials should be made to two funds through the <a href=\"http:\/\/nufoundation.org\/\">University of Nebraska Foundation<\/a> &#8212; the Rubens Pamies, M.D., Haitian Relief Outreach Fund #11614 and the Rubens Pamies, M.D.,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: -1in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 1in\">Lectureship to Eliminate Health Disparities #12030.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><i><span style=\"color: black;font-size: 10pt\">Through world-class research and patient care, UNMC generates breakthroughs that make life better for people throughout Nebraska and beyond.
