{"id":49151,"date":"2011-03-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-10T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/03\/10\/unmc-sees-record-growth-in-nih-research-funding\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:17:13","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:17:13","slug":"unmc-sees-record-growth-in-nih-research-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/03\/10\/unmc-sees-record-growth-in-nih-research-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC sees record growth in NIH research funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><b><i>112 percent increase in past three years brings total NIH funding to $91 million<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/\">University of Nebraska Medical Cente<\/a>r&rsquo;s momentum of growth in research funding from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nih.gov\/\">National Institutes of Health<\/a> soared nearly 112 percent in the last three years, far exceeding expectations.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The findings are part of a report that will be presented at the Friday meeting of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nebraska.edu\/board.html\">University of Nebraska Board of Regents<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The report compares the growth in NIH funding between the fiscal years 2008 and 2010. It found that funding at UNMC grew from $43 million to $91 million, a 112 percent increase. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unl.edu\/\">University of Nebraska-Lincoln<\/a> also realized significant growth in its research funding during this same time period going from $72 million to $94 million, a 31 percent increase.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">UNMC Chancellor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/chancellor.htm\">Harold M. Maurer, M.D.<\/a> said, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m proud of the initiative UNMC researchers have taken and that the private sector has been so supportive of our research enterprise. This investment is paying off.&rdquo;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/vc_research.htm\">Tom Rosenquist, Ph.D.,<\/a> UNMC&rsquo;s vice chancellor for research, said that <\/span>UNMC&rsquo;s research strategy has been successful although NIH funding has been flat and has lost money against inflation since 2003.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve seen record growth the past two years, and that doesn&rsquo;t include the stimulus money we received,&rdquo; he said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">During the two years of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recovery.gov\/About\/Pages\/The_Act.aspx\">American Recovery and Reinvestment Act<\/a>, the NIH funded $22 million for biomedical research at UNMC. The recovery grants ended in September 2010.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">The end of the ARRA funds and proposed cuts to the NIH budget, while a concern, won&rsquo;t dampen UNMC&rsquo;s research initiative, Dr. Rosenquist said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">He pointed to several factors that predict UNMC&rsquo;s continued success in research funding growth despite a decline in NIH funding:<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: -0.25in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\"><span>&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span>UNMC&rsquo;s overall funding, that includes NIH and all other sources, continues to grow &ndash; now at $115 million, a 15 percent increase from the year before;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: -0.25in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\"><span>&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span>Between 2000 and 2010, the number of UNMC researchers who received NIH funding grew from 62 to 106 &ndash; a 71 percent increase;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: -0.25in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\"><span>&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span>UNMC&rsquo;s average grant award has risen from $400,000 in 2003 to $700,000 in 2011; and<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: -0.25in;margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\"><span>&middot;<span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span>UNMC continues to excel in cancer research, while achieving high status in new areas.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.5in\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"color: black\">&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know how the NIH budget will be affected during the current round of budget cuts, but I am sure that UNMC scientists will continue to compete successfully, and that our NIH support will continue to grow,&rdquo; Dr. Rosenquist said. &ldquo;Our strategy <\/span>to go after more of the larger NIH grants<span style=\"color: black\"> has been successful so far and promises continuing success.&rdquo; <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><i><span style=\"color: black;font-size: 10pt\">Through world-class research and patient care, UNMC generates breakthroughs that make life better for people throughout Nebraska and beyond.
