{"id":49158,"date":"2011-03-17T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-17T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/03\/17\/unmc-sharing-clinic-to-offer-ophthalmology-services\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:17:03","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:17:03","slug":"unmc-sharing-clinic-to-offer-ophthalmology-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/03\/17\/unmc-sharing-clinic-to-offer-ophthalmology-services\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC SHARING Clinic to offer ophthalmology services"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><b><i><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Student-run clinic will provide low-cost eye exams for needy patients<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Beginning March 21, the student-run <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/sharing\/\">SHARING (Student Health Alliance Reaching Indigent Needy Groups) Clinic<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/\">University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/a> will now provide ophthalmology services to its patients. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">The ophthalmology night will be held at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmcphysicians.com\/v2\/default.asp?id=117\">UNMC Physicians Eye Specialists<\/a>, 3925 Dewey Ave., and students will have the capabilities to perform complete eye exams. Initially, ophthalmology night will be held on the third Wednesday of every other month. The students hope to provide the service on a monthly basis as the patient load increases. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">The students will launch the clinic serving seven patients in March and hope to see up to 15 patients by June. The clinic will accept referral patients from the UNMC SHARING Clinics and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hopemed.us\/\">Hope Medical Outreach Coalition Clinics<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"color: black;font-size: 12pt\">The students worked closely with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/eye\/\">UNMC Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Department<\/a> to make the ophthalmology night possible.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"color: black;font-size: 12pt\">&quot;We are pleased to offer eye exams for our SHARING Clinic patients,&rdquo; said UNMC medical student Tommy Muelleman, who worked on developing the clinic. &ldquo;The UNMC Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Department has been very generous in helping us plan and implement the new Ophthalmology Night for SHARING.&quot;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><b>&nbsp;<\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Founded in 1997, the SHARING Clinics&rsquo; mission is to provide quality, low-cost health services to those in need, while also providing an opportunity for valuable student education.
