{"id":49164,"date":"2011-03-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-22T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/03\/22\/unmc-research-leads-to-new-information-regarding-treating-adhd-in-small-children\/"},"modified":"2022-08-28T19:16:59","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T00:16:59","slug":"unmc-research-leads-to-new-information-regarding-treating-adhd-in-small-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2011\/03\/22\/unmc-research-leads-to-new-information-regarding-treating-adhd-in-small-children\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC research leads to new information regarding treating ADHD in small children"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Clinicians who treat five and six-year-old children with <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmedhealth\/PMH0002518\/\"><font face=\"Calibri\" color=\"#800080\" size=\"3\">attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\"> (ADHD), now have new information regarding treatment.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">In an eight-week, double-blind clinical trial, atomoxetine was found to be well tolerated and effective at reducing the core symptoms of ADHD.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">The study was led by researchers at the <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/\"><font face=\"Calibri\" color=\"#800080\" size=\"3\">University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">, in collaboration with researchers at <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.duke.edu\/\"><font face=\"Calibri\" color=\"#800080\" size=\"3\">Duke University Medical Center<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">, in Durham, N.C., and <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbia.edu\/\"><font face=\"Calibri\" color=\"#800080\" size=\"3\">Columbia University<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\"> in New York. The results, which were published in the April issue of the journal Pediatrics, were based on findings involving the 101 children participating in the study.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Calibri\">&ldquo;The children treated with atomoxetine demonstrated significant improvement,&rdquo; said Christopher Kratochvil, M.D., professor <span style=\"color: black\">in the UNMC Department of Psychiatry and assistant vice chancellor for clinical research for UNMC.<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><span style=\"color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Even though the drug was generally useful in diminishing symptoms, Dr. Kratochvil said many of the children still experienced problems due to ADHD.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">This is the first randomized controlled trial of this medication in children as young as five, he said. The results will be useful in helping health professionals better educate parents about atomoxetine as a potential treatment choice.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">Dr. Kratochvil said that the study was prompted by the fact that although ADHD often initially presents at a young age, and young children with ADHD are often treated with pharmacotherapy, data supporting the use of medication to treat the disorder in young children is limited.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">There are more than a dozen stimulant medications approved for the treatment of ADHD in children age six and older, he said, as well as two non-stimulant medications. <\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Calibri\" size=\"3\">&ldquo;The variety of medications is useful, because it allows a clinician to select a treatment based on the best fit for a patient, and then if one medicine doesn&rsquo;t work other options are available,&rdquo; he said.<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><i><span style=\"font-size: 9pt;color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\">&nbsp;<\/font><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;line-height: normal\"><i><span style=\"font-size: 9pt;color: black\"><font face=\"Calibri\">Through world-class research and patient care, UNMC generates breakthroughs that make life better for people throughout Nebraska and beyond.
